The original emergency department built in 1992 in Fishersville, Virginia was not meeting the community’s demands. To address the growing strain on the existing facility, we looked to both renovate and add space to make the emergency department to make the layout more efficient.
The resulting 17,000 SF renovation and two-story 33,000 SF expansion (with 16,500 SF of shell space on the second floor) improves the overall flow of the ED to make an often very stressful visit less tense for patients, and efficiency of caregiving staff.
The ease of access, as well as the efficiency of triage, registration, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge forms a lasting impression of any healthcare facility. An emergency department’s design aims to ease the patient’s sense of disorientation, fear, and pain.
The new Emergency Department has 48 treatment rooms, including:
- Five rooms dedicated to behavioral health (two additional rooms are flexible for use by behavioral use patients)
- Three trauma/resuscitation rooms
- One Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner room
- One bariatric room
- One airborne infection isolation room
Treatment rooms have similar levels of acuity adjacent to each other for flexibility and care efficiency.
Other project features include:
- Improvements to the ambulance drop-off
- New walk-in entrance
- Mechanical penthouse for equipment serving the Emergency Department
