Courses Music Technology at IU South Bend

Below are descriptions of the music department course offerings in music technology. Unless otherwise noted, these courses are for undergraduate students. MUS-A 101: Introduction to Audio Technology (3 cr.)

Typically offered annually each fall semester. Prerequisite: None.

An introduction to the technology and techniques employed in audio recording, editing, and mixing; sound production for visual media, and live sound reinforcement.

MUS-T 190 Computer Skills for Musicians (3 cr.)

Typically offered annually each spring semester. Prerequisite: None.

Computer music notation systems and the use of word processing, graphics, data base, and other computer programs in music research and teaching.

MUS-X 430 Electronic Music Ensemble (1 cr.): The Audio-Visual Collective

Typically offered every semester. Can be repeated for additional credit. Prerequisite: None.

Focuses on developing live audio-visual performances through technology (which has so far included coding, patching, and animation, as well as digital, analog, and traditional instrumentation). The ensemble performs, composes, and investigates works for Live Audio Visual Ensembles. The AVC defines Live Audio Visual Ensembles as those that perform works meeting the following requirements:

  1. Works involve performative media (Live)
  2. Works involve at least two media (Audio & Visual)
  3. Works involve at least two performers (Ensemble)

MUS-A 102: Audio Techniques I (3 cr.)

Typically offered every other year during the spring of odd numbered years (2021). Prerequisite: MUS-A 102 recommended.

An introduction to studio and recording techniques, including theory and practice of the use of microphones in mono and stereo recording as well as the principles of digital recording.

MUS-K 403 Electronic Studio Resources I (3 cr.)

Typically offered every other year during the fall of odd numbered years (2021). Prerequisite: MUS-A 101 or MUS-T 120 recommended.

An introduction to the computer music studio, techniques of digital recording and editing, analog and FM synthesis, MIDI sequencing, and a comprehensive study of the literature and styles of the classic tape studios.

MUS-K 404 Electronic Studio Resources II (3 cr.)

Typically offered every other year during the spring of even numbered years (2022). Prerequisite: MUS-A 101 or MUS-T 120 recommended.

Study of advanced synthesis techniques, digital sampling, video synchronization, and multimedia applications.

MUS-K 405: Electronic Instrument Performance (1-2 cr.)

Typically offered every semester. Can be repeated for additional credit. Prerequisite: MUS-K 403 or MUS-K 404 Recommended.

Instruction in techniques and composition for live electronic performance.
