MISSION
Itotia Mexica Xi (cago), focuses on researching and educating by using dance to share a non westernized perspective of Mexican indigenous heritage and history.
Since 1521, danza “Azteca” has taken various interpretations - mostly by force. In response, various groups surged into the mainstream as a response of different social political climates. Many, continue to have the opportunity to lead and represent social justice initiatives which has helped establish identity. More indigenous traditional communities also exist in rural areas of Mexico, protected from colonial and religious impositions. Overall, all that practice danza form colonial resistance, creates a sense of identity and protects cultural and self preservation.
Itotia Mexica Xi strives to educate respectfully, focusing on leading engaging workshops and dance classes.
Workshops
Itotia educates through workshops. Using danza, we have taken the challenge of enagaging, sharing, and learning topics of decolonization and learn a non westernize point of view of our ancestors history.
Student Classes
Student classes are hosted once a week with holiday breaks and summer vacation. Follow @itotiamexicaxi on Instagram for updates on the student class schedule.
During our practice, we emphasize technique, meanings behind dances and traditions. We encourage overall wellbeing, physical health, mindfulness, community service, social justice and awareness.
As part of our growth, we collaborate with local folkloric and traditional dance groups, stay involved in our community, attend academic lectures and traditional ceremonies.
