Friends of Laupus Library ADVOCATE • SUPPORT • ENRICH

For 50 years, Laupus Library has served a large and diverse constituency of students, researchers, practitioners and citizens of eastern North Carolina.

In 2009, the Friends of Laupus Library was established to provide much-needed advocacy and support for the library, health sciences community and East Carolina University.
Laupus Library has a tremendous impact on the success of the students, staff and faculty across the entire Division of Health Sciences. Our librarians, resources and services are enhanced by the Friends, whose support ensures that we provide an excellent experience to everyone we serve."

-Beth Ketterman, director, Laupus Health Sciences Library

The Friends of the Laupus Library are the library's best advocates and representatives throughout the community. The Friends serve as the library's alumni through their support of library:

  • Collections
  • Services
  • Resources
  • Events
  • Exhibits
As a Brody School of Medicine alumnus, I know how instrumental Laupus Library was to my success as well as the class of 2006. By being involved with the Friends, my support helps Laupus continue serving ECU's growing health sciences."

-Dr. John Papalas, chairman, Friends of Laupus Library

When my research class or thesis students need assistance in searches, I direct them to the Laupus librarians. They guide my students in learning how to do searches and find the best evidence. Laupus Library offers support for teaching and research I do not want to be without."

-Dr. Anne Dickerson, professor, Department of Occupational Therapy, College of Allied Health Sciences

Laupus Library supports our growing Division of Health Sciences' faculty, staff and students. Some of the best of what Laupus offers includes:

  • Promoting scholarship
  • Listening to our patrons

HISTORY COLLECTIONS EXHIBITS

Laupus showcases the rich history and practice of health care by displaying collections, archival materials and nationally traveling, local and library-curated exhibits.

124 microscopes from the Donald Hoffman Microscope Collection are available for use and can be checked out from the History Collections.

Traveling exhibits from the National Library of Medicine covering the history of medicine and health care are also hosted by the library.

Some of the library's most fascinating exhibits feature collections and archives from The Country Doctor Museum.

Located in Bailey, N.C., it is the oldest museum in the United States devoted to rural health care history.

The museum is an essential component of Laupus Library's History Programs.

Its rare collections of 19th-20th century artifacts are displayed in Laupus Library, Division of Health Sciences schools and college, and other locations at ECU.

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW SERVICES

In 2014, Laupus Library's liaison librarians completed extensive training to provide a Systematic Review Service for ECU faculty and staff to ensure the highest quality in research support.

Since then, requests for the service have increased by 675 percent with eight international co-authors among 24 completed reviews.

Our collaboration with the systematic review service provided information critical to the Food and Drug Administration's regulation of vaping (or e-cigarette) retailers. Our systematic review, which is published in 'Tobacco Control,' was only possible with the expertise and collaboration of a Laupus librarian. This service is indispensable given the ever growing volume of scientific literature and the need to leverage high-quality scientific evidence to improve the health of the public."

-Dr. Joseph G. Lee, assistant professor, Department of Health Education & Promotion, College of Health & Human Performance

ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY

We make sure students have access to the current technologies that will ensure their success, be it top-of-the-line computers, 3D anatomy imaging programs, a state-of-the-art Ideum touchscreen table and cameras and laptops for loan.

PET THERAPY AND STUDENT EXAM BREAKS

Laupus offers scheduled therapy animal visits and provides coffee, food and activities to keep students' spirits and concentration levels high.

I come to this library purposely during finals week because of the crafts and snacks they plan. It makes us feel better, like we are being looked after and not forgotten during the hard times. Some of us are struggling, so the 'Hey, we are looking out for you,' and the 'We want you to do well,' support means a lot."

-Margaret Barry, class of 2018, College of Nursing

CULTURAL ENRICHMENT

Laupus showcases the works of local artists to enrich the cultural experience of our patrons.

MEDICAL HISTORY INTEREST GROUP LECTURE SERIES

For more than a decade, the series has been providing a broad and fascinating look at the history of medicine from some of the brightest speakers across ECU and beyond.

The library produces four lectures each semester to promote a greater understanding of the historical and philosophical underpinnings of today's health care disciplines.

Watch video recordings of past presentations online by visiting the Medical History Interest Group Lecture Series archives.

PROMOTING SCHOLARSHIP

We host special events and activities that culturally enrich participants and highlight the achievements and success of the Division of Health Sciences, including the annual Health Sciences Author Recognition Awards ceremony.
