HOMESCHOOL: EXTRA CREDIT BONUS - SETTING

CHAPTER 1 - CHAPTER 2 - CHAPTER 3 - CHAPTER 4 - EXTRA CREDIT: ATTACK - CHAPTER 5 - CHAPTER 6 - CHAPTER 7

From Kyle Mashima of SoloStats Live, the AVCA presents at-home training concepts for a period of social isolation.

In Chapter 3, we dove into some options that allowed you to practice a few different setting skills on your own. The fun doesn't stop there! In this bonus chapter, we're showcasing a couple of other methods and tools that you might be able to use to improve your setting.

A REBOUNDER is another piece of equipment that might be pretty easy to acquire if you don't already have one. They're a decent deal new, and can also be found pretty cheaply on craigslist, seeing that there are likely plenty of folks cleaning out their garage.

There are some different uses for a rebounder, and it can help develop setting skills in a few ways. Hitting the ball into the net will bounce the ball up into the air, simulating the reception of a pass.

The added hitting component helps with the swinging motion, as well - you've got to be fairly accurate to get the ball to do what you want.

Pretty simple, and helps you focus on specific components of the setting process: hit the ball into the net, observe the arc of the "pass", rotate and turn, face the pin, put it into the target.

You can make the objectives for this as hard or easy as you want depending on the skill level, and allows for plenty of your own creativity. Interestingly, motivated players will jump into this and get a bunch of reps - and the improvement is noticeable over the course of a season. Players that work on specific skills in a motivated way will inevitably improve in those areas.

You can also mix it up and practice your sets using a mini-volleyball to emphasize touch and feel. It can be done without access to either a hoop or basket, as well:

Using a mini-volleyball? Mark a spot on the wall and set at it from around 20 feet away. Toss the ball higher to increase the difficulty.

If you've got the elastic that we talked about in the opening chapter, you can make use of that as well by adding an extension to the tether. Just as above, mark a spot on the wall and set from around 15 feet:

The AVCA is proud to partner with Hudl, Sports Imports, Mateflex, and Baden in our ongoing mission to grow and support the volleyball community.
