Cochrane Public School News October 2017

Teaching Self-Regulation

Our Primary classes, with the help of Mrs. Kershaw (Child and Youth Worker), are learning how to recognize anxiety and stress by using a stoplight system. Students are learning how to self-identify various feelings and the different strategies/tools they can use to calm their bodies and minds so that learning and good decision making can happen. For example, a student who is feeling angry can use box breathing to help he/she become more calm. Box Breathing involves using their finger to trace a rectangular shape on a piece of paper while they inhale and exhale deep breaths.

Most classes have “Calming Bins” that are filled with tools and strategies.

S.T.E.M. Challenge

During the month of October, the grade 6/7 FI class worked on building balloon-powered cars. This STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activity introduced students to the importance of building prototypes by following the engineering design process. It also allowed students to collect and display data, calculate speed and learn about kinetic energy, propulsion, mass and force.

Creepy Crawl 2017

Our school hosted a Regional Cross Country Race on Oct. 13 which saw students from various area schools run a trail behind our school. This event culminated with a fun event called “The Creepy Crawl”. In this event, students from various classes ran the course in spooky and creepy attire. It was a great end to the day!

Bus Appreciation Day

Students in Mme. Penney and Mme. Charron’s Kindergarten class recognized Bus Appreciation Day this past month by creating thoughtful cards for our Bus Drivers. Parents, please take a moment to review bus safety rules with your child(ren). The Northeast Tri-Board Transportation website has many great resources: http://www.netribus.ca/en/safety.php

These young students personally thanked a bus driver for the very challenging but rewarding job that they do in being bus drivers!

During the month of October, the Eco Adventure Explorations class went hiking at Greenwater Park and a rock outcrop. They visited the Cultural Grounds with Mr. Gerald Chum and made bannock, cooked moose meat and made a craft replica of a dried beaver pelt. We also spent Halloween outdoors doing a scavenger hunt and told spooky stories around a campfire.

Fire Safety Week

The second week of October was Fire Safety Week! These wonderful students learned about the important role of firefighters and fire prevention. They also discussed what to do in the unfortunate event of a fire. Bravo Kindergarten students!

Apples, apples, apples...

Mme. Demers’ apple tree produced so many apples that she decided that it would be a wonderful learning opportunity to make Apple Crisp with her class. It was also a yummy, fall treat enjoyed by all!
