project justification
As a young girl, the careers that were advertised for women to pursue in their future tended to “appeal” to women. As a child of a Haitian immigrant that was very old-fashioned. The women's place was either to be a nurse/doctor while also being in the kitchen and taking care of your family. I decided to change the narrative. At a young age, I immersed myself in different involvements that provided knowledge on the various career avenues that men and women can explore. I took a strong liking toward science and technology and decided to act on them. Now as a junior majoring in Computer Engineering I reflect on my journey in joining the STEM world. As I look back I can see the fractures of where I could have gone through a different pathway. Fractures such as education curriculum, social and economic, and my heritage. I realize how important it is at a young age to be exposed to not only the typical job careers but the ones that are slightly harder paths and mostly dominated by men.
I grew up in an urban neighborhood where our curriculum consisted of basic math, reading, and science. I had to make a decision and explore on my own and develop my career interest. I believe that all women should be given the opportunity and knowledge to be able to excel in a field. So many talented women are falling through the cracks of settling for a safe career. While we can be cultivating the next wave of scientists, engineers, inventors, and mathematicians.
project description
The aim of this project is to explore the factors that encourage females to pursue a career in STEM. While also observing factors that discourage women from aspiring to obtain a career in STEM.
The main objective is to see the perspective and thought process behind women's career choice or their future career choice. Whether it has been affected by social, cultural, economic, or educational factors.
THE PROCESS
- Weekly Scholar Meetings with the Cohort
- Weekly Adobe Scholar Meetings with Vannessa Rodriguez
- Weekly Mentor Meetings with Ava Brillat
- Freeform project !
deliverables
The ultimate goal is to create a documentary of sorts. Where middle school female students, high school female students, professional women in STEM, and professional women who are not in STEM are interviewed. Where we could gain perspective on the journey so far in terms of the career now or future career. The project research and video will be developed into an Adobe Spark Web Page
