Krista Hines 3D Animator and Illustrator

Biography

My name is Krista Hines. I am a 3D animator and Illustrator. I graduated from Wake Technical Community College in 2018 with my Associate's Degree in Fine Arts. I transferred to East Carolina University the same year to pursue my Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Animation/Interactive Design.

Artist Statement

As a character animator, the focus is on bringing that character to life. For me, it's more than that. What makes them unique compared to others around them? Is it the way they walk? Talk? How they greet other people? How do they convey their emotions? Whenever I'm just out and about, I tend to look at how people act and notice the nuances in their movement. Maybe someone is sitting down and shaking their leg, or someone is waiting in line and cracks their knuckles. That seems like boring and usual stuff you would see daily, but for animating, it's more of a guide towards making that character more believable and authentic to the viewer. I strive for my animations to stand out for the audience's enjoyment and make them unique for myself and reflect my style.

Demo Reel

Lil Mummy

Since my main focus is 3D animation, I decided to concentrate my capstone project on creating and animating my own character. Below are concept sketches of my character in the early stages. I decided to go with the mummy idea. Also, there are the reference sketches I used for modeling to make sure the proportions were correct. Overall, I am happy with how the model turned out. I added a normal map onto the model for some extra detail, making it appear that the bandages were modeled instead of texture. Once everything was rigged, I first did a turntable animation. I then made a walk cycle animation to see how the character moves. Lastly, I created a brief animation to showcase the movement. I am so happy with how this turned out, and I can't wait to improve my skills further.

Max Animations

Using Max, a pre-rigged model, I created many short animations with him, but these three, in particular, were my favorite. The first video used audio from the movie, The Addams Family (1991) Trailer, and was one of the projects in the 3D animation course. I made a storyboard of this to plan out my animation, which is shown below.

The second video is a scary short animation practice piece. The third video was a final project for the 3D animation course. Creating these animations is what solidified my focus in 3D.

Daydreaming

Daydreaming tends to be a habitat of mine, and when I daydream, sometimes it helps with my creative process of working on a project. When coming up with the storyboard, I originally had a specific idea in my mind that I liked. However, after going over it and with some re-thinking, I decided to redo the storyboard entirely. I ended up using ideas from both storyboards and animated the final video below. This animation was made using Adobe After Effects, which was challenging at first. But by the end of it, it was an excellent learning experience, and I hope to use it again in the future.

Wonderland

This piece was about creating animated typography. I am a big listener of Electro-Swing (Electronic and Swing music genre combination), so I chose Wonderland by Caravan Palace. I decided to keep the color pallet to a minimum and used a combination of text and drawn assets to replace the words. Like Daydreaming, this was made using Adobe After Effects.
