Volcanoes are mountains were lava erupts from gaps in the Earth’s surface or crust. They are named after the Roman God of fire - Vulcan.
The map shows where you can find volcanoes around the world. There are around 1,350 active volcanoes around the world, with some even found under our oceans. Most are found around the famous ring of fire, as this is the meeting point of tectonic plates where lava can escape from the Earth..

Of many eruptions around the world over its history, one of the most well-known is an eruption in 79 A.D., which was one of the deadliest , burying the city of Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius in Italy erupted.
