ABOUT THE WRITER/DIRECTOR
Cameron Covell was 11 years old when he made his first movie. He had started
acting at age 9 and immediately appeared on “Cold Case,” “Arrested Development”
and many other commercials, plays and TV shows. But the bug to make films hit
him in 5th grade when he realized what he could do with a camera and a computer.
At age 16, as Cameron was attending LACHSA, the LA County High School for the
Arts, he made his 32nd short film and posted it on YouTube. Four years later “The
Most Beautiful Thing” has over 8 million views, along with being featured in the
Smithsonian Museum in 2013 as part of the Young Arts Scholars honor that
Cameron was awarded as a Presidential Scholar. Then at the age of 19, Cameron
decided he wanted his 55th film to be a feature! So, he wrote the script, gathered
his friends and used $5,000 of his acting money to shoot “Death By Potato.”
Cameron’s family had been making family movies together every summer for the
past 7 years, and they had been getting longer and more complicated every year, so
the thought of shooting a feature didn’t daunt any of them. His parents and older
brother all packed up to move with Cameron, 15 friends and two other parents, to a
rented cabin in Big Bear. They planned a 2-week shoot and figured that most of
them could also live in the house during shooting. With an additional camper and
small cabin down the street the Death By Potato gang had a crazy fun two weeks
living and working together on their first feature film. Good thing it was a comedy!
Since Cameron was studying at the USC Film School at this point, it took him over a
year to edit Death By Potato. They finally had a premiere screening in the Chaplin
Theatre on the Raleigh Studios lot the following summer. One of the actress’s father
came up to Cameron and mentioned that he is in distribution and maybe he could
help distribute the film. A year later and another $5,000, after more color correction,
a re-mix on the sound and another year of college, Death By Potato is ready to be
launched. The best part of the story is that all of the actors in the film went to High
School together and have stayed friends every since. They are an amazing group of
talented actors, stunt people and writers and they still love and support one
another. Most of them are all now Seniors in college and as they are preparing to get
out into the real world they look on Death By Potato as a life-long memory.
And all by 19 year-olds for $10,000!
