Can you change the shape of the clay?

In PSHE we began by thinking about what the word family means and how families can all be different. The children thought about a person who is special to them, takes care of them and then listed the things that this person does when looking after them. We also looked at pictures of different families and discussed similarities and differences.

We read the book, On Sudden Hill, by Sarah and Benji Davies which looked at different friendships and emotions. The children used their prior knowledge of emotions and discussed what the characters might be feeling in the story as well as thinking. We gathered information about what makes a good friend and explored that some friendships might make us feel unhappy and how to deal with this.

The children have loved their English lesson this week, our story was Stickman, by Julia Donaldson. They did a great job making their own characters for the story as well as retelling the main events. The children identified the rhyming words within the story and wrote and created their own section that was added on to it. They used their senses to describe what Stickman could see, hear, touch, smell, and taste on his adventures and used the information to write a postcard to Sticklady Love.

In Science we have been looking at different objects and what materials they are made from. The children handled a range of materials and thought carefully about their properties before recording them down. They explored why some materials would be a good choice to form an object, while others would not be. We also found out how the shape of solid objects can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. The children used good observational skills to test this theory.
