Lakeland Community College’s (LCC) Health Technologies program is one of the most highly regarded in the region with a yearly admittance waiting list. The Health & Innovation Center underwent a major renovation of the existing 52,000 sf and new addition of 75,000 sf to allow for an immersive simulated environment that provides real-life learning experiences for all students.

A NEW CAMPUS HUB

Lakeland Community College wanted to create an iconic building entry to the campus which did not exist at the time. Upon entry into the campus the first thing that met the visitor was a narrow end of the original Health Technologies Building.

Now, as the focal point of the main campus entrance, the renovated building provides a dynamical link to existing buildings. A large three-story atrium acts as a new campus hub that binds together the original building and new addition to the main campus buildings.

"AECOM's efforts and delivery of services to Lakeland are outstanding. Great team with great tenure 'under their belt,' listened to College leadership, faculty, and staff and integrated that visioning information into great programming realities." — Michael E. Mayher, Senior Vice President for Administrative Services and Treasurer

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

“HIVE” is a 10,000 sf innovation space that occupies two major areas of the building. The main programmatic space on the west side of the ground floor is separated on two levels by a tiered seating area with open meeting rooms and a full woodshop/electronics makerspace. Bordering the atrium, HIVE manifests itself in reconfigurable classrooms, social areas and an area for a “pop-up shop” for items created in the makerspace. The importance of HIVE is the educational programming being developed that students will use post-graduation.

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY

Based on the model of a functioning hospital, the simulated learning environment - from corridors to exams rooms - were designed to mimic real-life hospital spaces.

A robust simulation network allows for video/audio capture in all spaces throughout the building. The captured information is available to the faculty and students to use for debrief sessions, and for students to access for their own personal studies. Additionally, a local healthcare network is donating a patient-tracking program that will be implemented and used by the faculty. With this new technology, a patient avatar can be sent into the hospital system during an emergency and follow the patient until they are back home for occupational therapy.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY & SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND

LCC takes pride in their reputation as a national leader in sustainable community colleges. From the beginning of the design process, strategic energy usage was simulated to create an accurate energy profile for the project. Multiple results in the design of the project will sustain LCC as leaders into the future:

  • The building is tracking to receive a LEED GOLD rating.
  • The building was designed to be 45% below current ASHRAE guidelines.
  • Despite adding 80,000 sf of new programmable space, the facility is so energy efficient that the total campus utility consumption will decrease by 0.8%.

LCC is leading the next generation of healthcare professionals with a dynamic vision focused on creating a vibrant and innovative learning community.
