The Civil War: The Battle of Shiloh Kody Leach, Evann Chadd, Jordan Gadis, Ashley Feller
The Battle of Shiloh: April 6, 1862 - April 7, 1862.
The Battle took place at the Pittsburg Landing by the Tennessee River.
One advantage the Union got was the weather. Heavy rain gave the Union a day for reinforcements to reach the battlefield. This gave the Union an extra day to reach the battlefield, so they could start the war a day early.
Retreating to the woods, an area called the Hornets Nest, provided the Union enough time to prepare for the battle. This gave the Union time to physically and mentally prepare for the battle which was the next day.
There were 24,000 casualties combined in this battle. It was the most casualties that one battle alone had had at that point in the war. General Johnston of the Confederacy was killed during this battle. He was the highest ranking officer killed in the Civil War. Since the Confederacy lost their general, this is why this battle is so important.
The battle began when the Union troops under General Grant stopped at Pittsburg Landing, before attacking Corinth, where they waited for reinforcements. While they waited the Southern forces under General Johnston moved out of Corinth and attacked Grant at Pittsburg Landing.
