About The Artist

Artist Icon "littleteasprout"

Hello, my name is David Villanueva. I am an animator, illustrator, and editor. I have been a student at ECU for 4-years under the Animation/Interactive Design concentration, and I have a strong desire to practice and improve my skills. I love doing what I do because it allows me to share with the world what I perceive and what I imagine. Art has become a part of me that I want to share with others. Being able to speak and communicate through art excites me and keeps me moving forward to the next project.

Projects

Space Shooter - Video Game

For this project, we had to create a birds-eye view shooter game. The idea of my game is that you play as a little kid who has taken a cardboard box and has dubbed it their spaceship. The child then lets their imagination run wild! The ammo used is Nerf-Gun pellets which the child uses to conquer their enemies, who in reality is just their angry mother wanting to clean up. My game is about the imagination children have during their playtime and what sort of world they enter.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Dialogue Animation

This assignment was one we called a "Kinetic Typography." A video where I aligned animated text to match up with the audio. This assignment was a ton of fun, and I learned a lot about After Effects after this assignment. It made me even more interested in motion graphics as a whole. For my Kinetic Typography, I chose audio from the film "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World." Which is based on the comic series written by Brian Lee O'Malley. I decided on this specific scene because the acting was done in such a dynamic manner. Everything was overly exaggerated, and I figured I could show that with my animation.

The images used in this animation were all headshots I drew myself, however, the original characters do not belong to me.

This below is my storyboard. Something put together to help execute my final animation.

Creating a Monster and Other Character Designs.

I did this project in my first year of entering the animation concentration. For this assignment, we had to create a "Creepy Character." Down below is my character, "Belgriss." He is a monster who is strong like a bull but built like an insect. Combining these two species gave me the idea for Belgriss's design. The glows on Belgriss's body are supposed to be an iridescent glow on Belgriss's shell. There are other fun personality traits I gave this character which I showed in his character sheet!

"Belgriss" character sheet.

Here is the video game I created for my character, a 2D platformer, to get me warmed up in animation. I spent some time in Adobe Illustrator creating idle, walking, and jumping animations. In my video game, Belgriss jitters slightly, an intentional animation I added to the idle pose to make him appear more bug-like.

Below is an early progression sketch followed by the victory screen used for this video game.

To add to the strange creatures and characters I have made, down below is another character sheet. This one being named "Emet." A shadow-like figure who cloaks themselves and journeys across the land. Emet was a concept created for another video game assignment, much like my first 2D platformer.

Explosion Animation

Short and straightforward, this is one of many animations done for my Capstone Project. The explosion animation is a part of a series of various animations, including my ghost loop, a run cycle, and two motion graphic animations.

When planning my capstone, I had to storyboard all my animations before diving in; below was my first idea, the explosion.

AI Video Game Concept

Last on my presentation is an assignment that never got to see the light of day due to Covid-19; however, down below are screenshots of my character concepts and art done for this video game. The assignment had us program an enemy character to follow the player. The player would have to work around the AI and achieve their goal. For my project, I made my player a sorceress named "Beatrix." She sets out on a journey to the "Tomb of Ancients." Here she comes across the "Orb of Spells," an orb powerful enough to help any mage conjurer any spell. The player must sneak past an AI-controlled enemy, also known as the Guardian of the Tomb. A giant monster that sleeps and protects over the Orb of Spells. The player may choose to engage in combat or stay hidden and retrieve the orb. But be careful as the Guardian of the Tomb is a formidable foe.

I made the Zombie Girl illustration in pre-production. She served as the original main character, but she was scrapped for a better-suited protagonist due to story changes.
