Spinach and Spokes Athens Locally Grown offers produce in an unusual setting

A doorway separates the dimly lit market area from Ben’s Bikes, a locally owned bicycle shop. Since they do not have their own space, volunteers with Athens Locally Grown rent the space from Ben’s every week, filling it with shelves to temporarily house fresh deliveries from local farmers. Mary Songster, one of the market's volunteers, scans a digital list of orders. Songster says they receive anywhere from 45 to 200 orders to fill per week. (Photo/Sarah Freund, sgf67313@uga.edu)
The market houses a wide range of goods, from eggs to vegetables to seafood. Each of the produce items is labeled by the farm from which they came, scratched on the shelf with erasable chalk. (Photo/Sarah Freund, sgf67313@uga.edu)
