New Cures for Breast Cancer by: saVannah arcas
Around 15% of women will be diagnosed with ("U.S breast...") breast cancer. Breast cancer has evolved drastically over the years. Breast cancer is defined in stages. Stage 1 being the least aggressive to Stage 4 being the most aggressive. New chemotherapies are being developed that will hopefully help in the fight for a cure. Breast cancer can change someone's life in a blink of an eye. The goal is to find a cure for to stop breast cancer for the future.
Types of Breast Caner/Treatments
ER positive breast cancer, also known as estrogen receptor positive cancer is fueled by estrogen. It is one of the most common types of breast cancer. This type of cancer responds well to treatment.
One of the most difficult cancers to treat is Triple Negative. It is not caused by any of the hormones or the HER2 protein. Therefore it does not respond to any of the therapies used for the other types. It is found in younger people rather then older. The only treatment is known as "red devil" because of its color and aggressiveness.
Areas Where Breast Cancer Starts
DCIS or ductal carcinoma in situ is a non invasive breast cancer. Found in the milk ducks it does not spread beyond there. On the other hand IDC or invasive ductal carcinoma has spread to surrounding breast tissue. IDC can affect both men and women. It encompasses about 80% of all breast cancers.
ILC (Invasive lobular carcinoma) is found in the milk carrying ducts that has spread outside the ducts. It is mostly found in older woman.
Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is like ILC except it has not spread outside the lobules. It is not considered a breast cancer but makes woman at higher risk for breast cancer.
IBC (inflammatory breast cancer) is very aggressive and also very rare. It can spread within days or hours.
Treatments
Herceptain is a targeted treatment that specifically attacks the HER2 protein. It has significantly changed the prognosis for HER2 cancer.
Perjeta is the newest targeted treatment for HER2 breast cancer. In conjunction with Herceptin this has been the greatest break through for this type of cancer.
Herceptin and Perjeta come together as a team to target the HER2 protein.
There is no way of preventing breast cancer, early detection is the only way of finding it early. There are many theories that there really is a cure for breast cancer, but the pharmaceutical companies will never allow it to be because of the money factor. We can holy hope that one day there will be a cure.
