Hubba Bubba By Micayla Abela

Introduction

Wrigley's was founded in 1891 by William Wrigley. William Wrigley was a business man, selling soap and baking soda, he gave a piece of his original flavoured gum with each purchase sold. Eventually Mr Wrigley noticed his gum was more popular then the baking soda and soap and began his business "Wrigley's". Hubba Bubba was introduced as a product in 1979, a less sticky choice for gum making the consumers able to blow bubbles without the fear of the tacky residue.

The Product Cycle

Manufacturing Process

  1. The gum based is melted and purified.
  2. The melted base is the poured into a large mixer that can hold one ton. The sweeteners and flavours are added and slowly mixed through.
  3. The mixture is rolled into a loaf where it is then sent through rollers that form a thin, largely spread ribbon shape. The gum is then powered lightly with a sugar substitute.
  4. The gum is then cut into a particular pattern.
  5. After this process, the gum is moved into a temperature controlled room to chill.
  6. The gum is then packaged and distrubuted to stores around the world.

Survey Findings

Of survey completed, 100% of the Mercy College community have consumed Wrigley's Hubba Bubba. Each generation has been surveyed and each have eaten Hubba Bubba or a similar product that has been disturbed via the same company, Wrigley's. As figure one suggests, the teenage youth are well equated with the product Hubba Bubba, 55% of all surveys conducted suggest that between the age of 15 and 25 have the highest level of consumption of the product today. This may occur because of the age group and what generation Hubba Bubba is advertised to.
Survey's conducted throughout the Mackay community detail that 75% of gum consumers have the knowledge of what components are involved within the creation of the Hubba Bubba product. Figure two suggests that three quarters of consumers have made themselves knowledgeable on what ingredients are put into creating the product, this points out that the community have a vast idea about the product they consume.
Figure three out lines the consumers knowledge on the where abouts of the Hubba Bubba facilities. 80% of survey's conducted had no knowledge of where this Wrigley's product was manufacturing or where any of the components are based from.
Overall Hubba Bubba is a loved product, a majority of the surveys conducted by random scored the product a 7 out of 10. 90% believe Hubba Bubba is a popular product, it is well known, fun and great for blowing bubbles. Figure 4 presents a graph detailing the flavour rating (Blue for boys, purple for girls). The main issue with the Hubba Bubba product is the lasting of the flavour. As tests suggest the flavour runs out after 8 minutes.

Social, Environmental and Economic Considerations/ Interconnections

Social Considerations/Interconncections

The Wrigley's foundation in Australian support and promote many different foundations and programs; this helps get young people involved in helping out their community and environment.

  • Green & Healthy is one of the programs Wrigley's support. This program is a statewide competition where schools are recognised for their green and healthy endeavours by cleaning up their schools and eat healthy. Approximately 28,000 students are actively helping the program each year.
  • Waste Wise is another Australian school based program. This foundation aims to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.
  • Wrigley has been a long term supporter for the NSW Rural Fire Service. The company has been providing financial support for more than 15 years. In 2010, Wrigley's donated $8000 to training materials and other items to benefit all fire brigades within the Hornsby Shire.

Environmental Considerations/Interconnections

Sustainability is a large priority for Wrigley. The company has committed people, resources and innovative energy to improving our environmental stewardship.

  • Environmentally, the Wrigley company aims to eliminate any methods, machinary and products used that could prove hazardous to the environment. Wrigley's has begun this act by reducing the amount of plastic covering by 6.5%. An estimated 80 tonnes of plastic has been save and reused.
  • The company strives to eliminate all fossil fuel and green house gas use by 2040. This has been gradually put into motion by reducing the fossil fuel energy conumption by 25% since 2007. Wrigleys has installed 610 solar panels on top of the Australian factory ywarehouse alone that produces more than 50% of the office energy consumption.
  • Wrigley's is exploring the use of renewable energy ie solar, wind, water and methane from the landfill as it replenishes after a short period of time.
  • Rain catchments are used to supply more than a third of the energy used for cooling towers. This saves water and energy associated with air-conditoning.
  • A $400,000 investment was conducted that generates above 150,000 kilowatts per year. This investment now has saves 125 tonnes of carbon from the Asquith's annual footprint.

Economic Considerations/Interconnections

In the last ten years, new opportunities have presented themselves that benefit both Wrigley's and the world community.

  • Wrigley's are a successful multinational company. The company profits in sales over $3.7 billion per year. Many of the factories and facilities Wrigley's use to produce Hubba Bubba have energy saving equipment (solar panels) installed.
  • Wrigley's has been able to produce a "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" program. In the last 2 years, Asquith has been able to expand the waste management programs and recycle more than three quarters of waster and send zero waste to landfill.
  • Wrigley's gum in general has found properties because of its high sugar levels to be able to produce green electricity. "Since January 2009, disposable solid waste is also diverted from normal landfill to a bioreactor at Woodlawn, where the methane produced from decomposing waste is harnessed to generate alternative energy which is directed back into the electricity grid." (Wrigley's, 2015)

Issues

One of the main issues that has been identified would be the disposal of gum after consumption. Chewing gum is non-biodegradable, both children and adults litter and the product is not being disposed of properly.

Advantages/Disadvantages of Strategy's

PreFerred Strategy

Strategy 1 is the preferred strategy because it benifits all aspects (social, economic and environmental).

Reasons for choSen strategy

  • By altering the recipe pollution could decrease.
  • The product would become a healthier option.
  • Sales for Hubba Bubba would improve because of reason 1 and 2.

Possible Outcomes for Strategy 1

  • Profit increase is possible because consumers will jump at the idea of their fun, childhood gum being environmentally beneficial and healthier themselves.
  • Altering the recipe could prove to be a success in the future because it will give a positive spin to the company image. This is because Wrigley's will be promoting the environment by being an evnvironmentally friendly organisation.
  • In the future by changing the product, Wirgley's is supporting environmental committed, boosting once again the company image and public support.
