PSI experts and activists improve the availability, affordability and use of effective malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Nearly half the world’s population is at risk of malaria. Using case management, case identification, and prevention through insecticide-treated nets and drug-based methods, we aim to change that reality. To determine readiness to test and treat malaria, in 2019, PSI Myanmar conducted a survey which showed that 50% of clinics and 31% of pharmacies stocked at least one antimalarial medicine, however only a few facilities had at least one trained healthcare provider. Although private sector providers affiliated with PSI were shown to fare better than non-affiliated providers, results indicate that many were not ready for proper malaria case management. PSI's poster session "Readiness of formal private sector providers for malaria case management in malaria high burden areas of Myanmar" lays out support that should be given to aid with case reporting and malaria control. Progress has recently stalled in Vietnam's ambitious plan to eliminate Malaria by 2030. To get back on track, healthcare providers built and deployed Community Engagement strategies. Check out our poster session "Community engagement to strengthen malaria elimination in 4 provinces in Vietnam" and hear how 98% of the beneficiaries PSI reached reported an increased confidence in their ability to seek treatment from providers! Great strides have been made to eliminate malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion. However, the forest worker population is still at risk, and requires new methods of data collection to understand how they are seeking treatment. Join PSI to see what role respondent-driven sampling plays in the quest to eliminate malaria. Forest goers have a higher risk of getting infected with malaria as a result of the type work they do. As a high at-risk population, it is crucial to understand their care seeking behaviors, especially what their source of care is and the reasons behind those decisions. PSI's poster session "Understanding where and why they seek care for febrile illness: Findings from forest goers in malaria hotspot townships of Myanmar" is a great way to learn why participants gravitated toward community health volunteers and government basic health staff. Since 2015, PSI has worked to provide better access to malaria testing and treatment in the greater Mekong Subregion. Part of that access includes improving malaria case management within the private sector. In Madagascar less than 50% of private health clinics have rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) available for malaria--despite the private sector being the first source of treatment for 1/3 of childhood fever cases. For Angola it can be a challenge to provide quality health services. 60% of child hospitalizations under the age of five can be attributed to malaria.
