3D Vermont is a yearly competition founded by our friend Michael Hathorn, High school History & Tech teacher in Vermont.
It's a chance for high schools from all over Vermont to come together in the spirit of collaboration and competition.
A day to show the product of countless hours of research and work.
14 Teams of middle school & high school students from across the state met at Vermont Tech College in Randolph, Vermont.
They came prepared with pride, and team attire, to represent their towns and schools.
They came with cool team names and a presentation table where they were required to show...
their understanding of historical context, digital design fundamentals, and...
their use of historical documentation to inform their 3D designs.
Their attention to scale and willingness to take on big projects was also apparent. Each team was asked to reproduce one local historical landmark.
Their reproductions of historical buildings were designed in SketchUp, then printed and placed throughout a gymnasium sized map of Vermont.
Geographic placement was pretty important.
This whole process required a lot of attention...
Contemplation.....
and an eye for detail.
oh..and lots of SketchUp socks.
Teams were judged by local architects, historians and community members.
Awards from various sponsors included; Chromebooks, Scholarships and a brand new 3D printer for their school.
Rutland High's 3D Raiders took home first prize for their reproduction of the Historic Chittenden Hydro-Electric Powerhouse.
And all the teams took home new skills......and a new pair of SketchUp socks, Which some quoted as being their reason for wanting the prize so bad in the first place.
