RULE THE ROAD, BUT FIRST WEAR THE CROWN

Increased use of helmets as an efficient way of minimizing road accidents and deaths. The single most successful way to avoid head injuries and deaths resulting from motorcycle and bicycle accidents is to wear a helmet. It has been shown that wearing a helmet decreases the incidence and severity of injury among motorcyclists by around 70%, reduces the possibility of death by about 40 percent, and greatly reduces the health care costs associated with such accidents. One of the fastest and healthiest ways of active travel is cycling. Bicyclists have hearts that are safe. In fact, cyclists tend to have a heart disease rate that is 18 percent lower than people who do not cycle. The risk of suffering from cardiovascular disorders can also be minimized by opting to walk. Studies have shown that walking every day will decrease the risk of getting a stroke significantly. Towns and cities can be designed to encourage more people to cycle. By introducing laws that make helmet use compulsory, implementing these laws, and raising public awareness about the laws, as well as the advantages of helmet use many countries have succeeded in raising helmet use rates. This new handbook for helmets draws on such examples.
