Net Primary Productivty

Hokkaido receives much less rainfall per year compared to the average deciduous temperate forest. It is found at 43.2203° N, 142.8635° E. The fauna diversity in this area is relatively low.

Soil Quality

The northern tip of Hokkaido is classed as a subzone of the podzolic soils; the remainder of the island is included in the subzone of the acidic brown forest soils. This brown forest soil is very fertile, leading to the forests often getting cut down for agriculture.

Invasive and Endagered

The endangered red-crowned crane. The destruction of natural habitat on breeding grounds, in wintering areas and along migration routes is having a devastating effect on crane and other migratory bird populations. The main cause of this species becoming endangered is the H in HIPPCO, or habitat destruction. The other factors of HIPPCO have not had much an effect on the red-crowned crane.

The Bull Thistle is an invasive species. The first record was in 1960s, at Hokkaido. It was accidentally introduced through grains or pastures. It has competition with native species, crops, pasture, etc, and is harmful for the spines on stems and leaves

Animals in Deciduous Biome

The Sika Deer survives well in this biome due to their ability to adapt. During winter, their coat becomes darker and shaggier and the spots less prominent, and a mane forms on the back of the males' necks.

Steller's Sea Eagle survives well in Hokkaido's biome due to their diet of mostly fish and attraction to abundant Pacific cod that live in the waters of Hokkaido.

In the winter, Japanese martens tend to go to the forests where they can get the most prey. They tend to choose well-established forests because of the ways the creatures have specialized and due to their long life-span. The deciduous forest's of Hokkaido are both well-established and full of plenty of prey for the martens.

Plants in Deciduous Biome

The Japanese Beech tree survives well in this biome due to its trait causing it to grow best in the deep, rich, moist, well-drained soils of Hokkaido.

Korean Red Pines grow well in the deciduous forests of Hokkaido due to their ability to gross fast in forests on deep, well-drained soils subject to warm, moist conditions. It is intolerant of poor soils and cold, drier climates.

The Yeddo Spruce grows well in this biome because it reproduces very well.
