The Access and Participation Plan Rewrite Progress Update: February 2023

Thank You!

In December, we carried out the first stage of the APP consultation as part of the APP rewrite. Thank you again to everyone who attended one of our APP Consultation workshops at the end of last year or completed our APP consultation form. This first stage of the consultation process was a highly valuable experience for our team and your feedback has informed our direction of travel as we continue the APP rewrite.

In the first stage of the APP consultation, we consulted with a wide range of groups. These included:

  • The APP Oversight Group
  • The Students' Union
  • The Student Experience Advisory Board
  • The Disability Steering Group
  • The wider staff community
  • The wider student community
  • Partner schools and school teachers

We have produced an FAQs document which is also available on the APP Consultation webpage. The FAQs document aims to answer the many questions we received.

If you are unable to find an answer to a question you may have about the APP, or the APP rewrite process, please contact us.

Updates

Risk Register

  • Following the first stage of the APP consultation, we have produced Draft Risk Registers for each stage of the student lifecycle based on the barriers to equality of opportunity the University community has identified. We have also included risks from our own data, as well as data frim the OfS.
  • The final version of our APP will only include a small number of risks which we have identified as having the greatest impact on our students and/or the highest probability of occurring. These will be known as our Priority Risks. An extended risk register will be included as an annex to the APP.
  • It is unlikely the final risk register will look like it currently does upon the publication of the new APP, and the wording will likely develop over the coming months.
  • If you have any questions, or if you think any risks are missing, contact us.

Outcomes Matrix

  • Your feedback has helped us to refine the Outcomes Matrix and identify APP related activity which we were previously unaware of.
  • We will share an updated Outcomes Matrix with you in due course, along with an updated evaluation strategy and evaluation toolkit to help you plan and measure the impact of new and existing activity that you deliver to support our APP targets.

Theory of Change

  • The majority of feedback from the first stage of the APP consultation indicated that the Theory of Change in its current format, while beneficial for strategic planning, would not be useful as an activity planning tool.
  • We want to ensure the materials and resources we provide you are as useful as possible, so we will be reviewing our current offer and developing a new suite of resources for activity planning, programme design and monitoring and evaluation.

Next Steps

  • The second stage of the APP rewrite began in January and is running until March
  • This will allow staff and key student groups most impacted by the APP to input their thoughts to the draft version of the risk register
  • We will then move on to the third stage of the APP rewrite, where we will begin collating and gathering evidence to create the first draft of our new APP.
  • The final stage will run from May to July, where the APP Oversight Group, Education Board, UEB and Council will approve our new APP.
  • As part of the final stage, other boards will be asked to confirm that all areas of the student lifecycle have been covered and that the student voice is present throughout.

We'd love to hear from you!
