Youtube Is The New TV

By: Zisis Zias

Back in the old days TV was the most popular device, it was the biggest thing. But time has passed and tv is starting to "get boring" according to 3rd graders in New Jersey. Before TV their where radios which were made in 1901 but 25 years later the Tv was made on March 25 1925, but then again 80 years laters a new competitor came out by the name of YouTube. Chad Curly comes up with the idea of a website called YouTube which later overruns TV for children.

The Official Logo For YouTube

According to Eric (which used to run marketing for YouTube) "YouTube has a large child audience. Officially, you're supposed to be at least age 13 to have a Google account, but it's clear that many people younger than that are watching YouTube"

For children to sneak in a google account and saying their above the age of 13 must mean there is something about YouTube that makes children want to watch it. According to a third graders, YouTube is "more entertaining" or "fun to watch". It being more entertaining, children are watching more of it than tv according to research study's . But the big question that people are asking is "what makes children watch more YouTube than Tv?"

Children now in days are mostly into video games and music which YouTube fully provides. In fact 96% of that age group consume online video via social media sites for an average of 11 hours per week. Tv does not have music videos or gaming videos, that's why children are just not watching that much TV.

YouTube is fully aware of them having a lot of under aged audience and because of that "YouTube launched an exclusive Kids app earlier this year, to create a safe place for children to watch. They try to make YouTube as safe as possible, that's why they have people watch new videos on YouTube to make sure it's safe for children. But that doesn't mean they filter through everything.

YouTube has a system where if a YouTuber (A.K.A a person who makes videos for YouTube) posts something visually too revealing of somebody they will either ban the video and complain to the YouTuber or they will put a age restriction. But for them to put a age restriction the video must not be too revealing and not have to many "dirty" actions. Though if it is too "dirty" and too revealing they will ban the video. They do this so that YouTube can maintain certain standards and avoid loosing their credibility so that they may keep their general audiences as much as possible.

YouTube, being child friendly, a lot of parents approve of it for their children and so YouTube gets more viewers for their website. YouTube also knows that TV children companies are loosing money. This is because online media is so popular that children aren't watching Nickelodeon or Cartoon network after they come back from school unlike 10 years ago when these Chanel's were the only source of entertainment they had at 3:00 when kids would get home from school.

Researchers say that children still watch tv but the biggest reason why they still watch it is because of sports. A lot kids enjoy watching sports or even playing them. But many people make the mistake of assuming that live sports are only on TV. The official sport websites stream games playing on TV, and because of technology there is nothing on TV that you can't watch it online. Which makes TV very obsolete if you think about it.

YouTube being safer and more entraining makes it more appealing for people like me and others. Video games, being so popular and having a source for that makes YouTube very entraining and very enjoyable to watch. It definitely sounds very amusing for children.

In addition, one of the major problems with TV is that it has so many ads. Most people now a days are impatient and don't want to sit through ads. Statistics show "63% of millennials believe television content carries too many commercials, while only 41% feel the internet carries too many ads" and with children and adults not wanting to sit through ads they don't watch TV.

Overall, children are watching more YouTube than TV because TV has too many ads, isn't as entertaining as it used to be and doesn't have exclusive content. While YouTube has music videos, video games and is as child friendly as TV.
