Cancer Never Sleeps, So We Walked All Night

The Curry College community recently walked our Milton Campus for Relay for Life, the world’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event benefitting the American Cancer Society.

Over 130 community members attended the event, which raised $5,000 dedicated to saving lives. In addition to walking for a good cause, cancer survivors told their stories of impact, garnering support from our welcoming community.

As the night winded down and the participation group dwindled, the 4:00 a.m. hour only saw a few lasting walkers, including Nick Norman, Ean McGonigle, and Chris Kourtelidis from the Curry men’s soccer team.

“It was important for me to finish the Relay for Life because cancer has impacted so many people close to me and many others,” said Norman, whose father was diagnosed with Stage 4 jaw cancer last semester. “Because of my dad’s diagnosis, he had to get half of his jaw removed and replaced with his fibula bone. Due to complications, he cannot walk or eat the same way he could prior to his surgery.”

Norman and his teammates logged 26.2 miles during the ten-hour window, walking for his dad and so many others that aren’t physically able. “My health allows me to do stuff like this, and sometimes I take it for granted.”

The men’s soccer team has helped Norman adjust to difficult life changes, and it’s that sense of community that keeps his spirits high.

“We all look out for each other; it truly is a brotherhood.”

“Our goal for Relay was to create an event that engaged the entire Curry Community. It certainly did that,” said Ryan Ford, Director of Student Center Facilities & Student Development. “I’m very proud of the event that the committee was able to put together, and we’re already looking forward to next year!”
