A message from our Headteacher, Mrs Harries
As we approach the end of term and the academic year I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and members of the community who have continued to support Haverfordwest High VC School during this first, quite challenging, year.
Despite the stress caused to all by the operation of the school over a split site, our pupils have continued to amaze us with their achievements throughout the year. My thanks to all who took part in the many opportunities that we continue to offer and I would like to pass on my congratulations for the success a large number of pupils achieved in all aspects of school life - academic, sporting and cultural.
We still have a way to go to achieve the excellence we strive for, but I can assure you that all staff and governors are dedicated to giving our pupils a school experience that will prepare them for the society in which we live.
Work on the additional accommodation at Portfield site is now well underway as is our continued programme of improvements to the site. As you are aware, pupils in years 9 and 11 in September will remain on the Prendergast site until October half term whilst this work is finalised. All buses will transport pupils to the Portfield site and pupils in these year groups will be transferred over to Prendergast and back again with slightly adjusted times of the day to facilitate this. The details of these arrangements were included in my final letter for the year.
The plans for the new school are still on track with the start of the tender process now underway. Once the contractor has been decided upon and any plans are available we will be holding information evenings for parents to give you the opportunity to see what is being proposed. More on this as soon as possible.
May I finish with my best wishes for a happy, healthy, safe and enjoyable summer break. We look forward to welcoming our pupils back on Thursday, 5th September 2019.
Mrs J Harries
Pennaeth/Headteacher
Building a Better Digital World @HHVCS
Over three weeks in June and July 86 members of staff at HHVCS embarked on a mammoth training exercise in Google for Education Training, Upbeat iPad Training and Google for Administration Training led by Ryan Evans from the Learning Technology Company Aspire2Be. This commitment to CPD was made possible by the recent Professional Development grants awarded by the Welsh Assembly Government. Twenty four teaching staff are now Level 1 Google Certified Educators as they completed the gruelling 3 hour exam at the end of their training. All support staff and numerous teaching staff were trained in the use of specific iPad Apps and our Admin staff were trained in the use of GSuite.
Following this training our Digital Leaders, led my Mrs Price, were trained in the same iPad Apps so they can also support the staff and pupils in the classroom. It has been a very exciting week for all involved and staff are looking forward to using these tools in the classroom to enrich the learning experiences of all pupils.
2018-19 has also been a year full of opportunities for our pupils too! A selection of our girls had an amazing day at the School of Applied Computing in our continued collaboration with the University of Wales, Trinity St David for Cyber Girls First Day 2019. During ICT lessons Year 8 were given the opportunity to programme BBC Microbits. They were also very lucky to attend a thoroughly rewarding session with STEM providers working with BBC Microbit controllers, learning how to programme, then using principles from C+ , Python and JAVA languages. They were busy programming the controller and the buggy so that they could all participate in a final battle of the buggies in the arena at the end of the training!
All the students were high end performers in science and technology that were rewarded for their efforts in both subjects this year. And to top it all off, some of our very talented Sixth Form students passed their Cisco #netacad Cyber Security Essentials exam this week.
There will be more stem activities to come next year where we will be able to focus a larger number of students to encourage them into stem based subjects later on in their journey through further education.
And who can forget the superb ICT and Computer Science Trip to London this year? Bletchley Park, The National Museum of Computing, Harry Potter, Lego, M&M, Bubba Gump and Mamma Mia ... all rolled into one excellent opportunity to see how ICT and Computer Science underpins the world in which we live.
Encore! Encore!
Our Expressive Arts team, along with a some very dedicated helpers from across the school, really did put on a show for us this summer! Congratulations go to the very talented cast of The Wizard of Oz who lit up the hall in a world of colour this term. From the sleepy, muted town of Kansas to the multi-coloured amazement of Oz with its munchkins, witches and the grand old Wizard himself, audiences were left wowed after each performance. Huge thanks go to the whole team - including the back stage crew, technicians and county music service - who truly set the bar for future performances to come. The Music Department were also extremely lucky to receive a £500 bursary from the Gild of Freemen, Haverfordwest, presented to them on the final night by Mrs Pat Barker-Swales.
The actors were amazing, the costumes were fabulous, and the music and production was very professional - great talent on show!
A huge congratulations to everyone involved in The Wizard Of Oz. A very professional production. I loved every minute of all three performances (yes I went every night).Outstanding! To everyone involved, thank you for all the hard work that went into a fantastic show. Can’t wait for the next production!
Parhau i Ddathlu Dwyieithrwydd!
Year 7 and 8 Trip to Llangrannog
On the 10th of May, the Welsh Department of Haverfordwest High VC School took 92 students in year 7 and 8 on a trip to Gwersyll yr Urdd, Llangrannog, for the weekend. The students were given opportunities to undertake some exciting activities including skiing, horse riding and go carting. During this time students were able to practise and use their Welsh skills whilst having fun with their friends and exploring beauty of the Ceredigion coastline. Great fun was had by all! The staff are now busy preparing a fun-filled programme for 2019-20 to celebrate the Welsh language and culture which our students are fortunate enough to be experiencing. Keep your eyes peeled for Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae, our St David's Day celebrations, the School Eisteddfod and trips yet more fun events with the Urdd!

Celebrating Success @HHVCS
Harvard University Summer School - Efa Walker
On 23rd June I was lucky enough to travel to Harvard University Summer School with 7 other Welsh students as part of a funded scholarship from the SEREN Network. Whilst there, I studied Feminist Philosophy for two weeks, reading academic materials, completing presentations and writing essays, allowing me to do a semester’s worth of work in a fortnight. Through the course, I also had the opportunity to go to the Schlesinger library and look at first hand documents from famous philosophers, and was able to study in the famous Widener Library in Harvard Yard, staying in student accommodation. We were also able to attend extra lectures, and could explore more subjects through these, as well as preparing for university with workshops. As we were there over 4th July, we also had the chance to celebrate Independence Day in Boston, which was a really enjoyable extra experience for all of us. The Summer School allowed me to make friends from across the globe, and was an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity which I am extremely glad I applied for, as it has really opened my eyes and made me feel much more prepared for university, and excited to study what I love in the future.
Rotary Young Writer National Winner - Euan Sinclair
Congratulations to the extremely talented Euan Sinclair on achieving the accolade of National Winner in the Senior category of the Young Writer competition. This is a huge achievement for someone who is still in Year 10 and we are sure that he will go on to achieve many great things in the world of writing.
Further Rotary Successes
Our many talented musicians were celebrated at the Rotary Sounds Fantastic concert which was held this term at Rhosygilwen. These are very familiar faces to all of us who have attended the wealth of musical events which have been held this year and we hope to see them return to the stage next year in our Expressive Arts programme.
We also have two very deserving 6th Form students who have been chosen for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. Both Thomas and Tieg will be taking part in an intensive leadership camp in Brecon this summer where they will gain valuable skills and hone their leadership potential. Good luck boys!
Success On Stage and On the Waves
Seth Morris, another of our hugely talented 6th Form students, deserves a massive round of applause for his achievements this year. Not only has he been crowned British Junior Surf Champion for the third time, but he has secured a coveted place in the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain!
Seren Network Success
Massive Congratulations to Cerin Joy and Roshni Sreeram who have been chosen from hundreds of applicants to be part of the Jesus College Seren Summer School considering 'The Earth's future'. Both girls received commendation for the quality of their applications. Cerin is hoping to study Engineering at University and Roshni hopes to follow a career in Medicine. We are very proud of them both.
Becoming Ambassadors to Improve our Health and Wellbeing
A selection of our Year 8 students underwent intensive training as part of the JustB programme as part of Public Health Wales' smoking prevention programme for schools. They now have a mission to discuss the risks of smoking, the benefits of being smoke free and to reduce the amount of young people who are smoking in 2019-20.
Celebrating Sporting Successes
It has been a very busy and hugely successful term for pupils’ sport in school. With successes coming in thick and fast, both whilst representing HHVCS and outside clubs, our social media sites have been a constant stream of good news!
Sports Day
At the start of the summer term we had our first Haverfordwest High VC Sports Day. This was a fantastic day with all pupils in KS3 encouraged to take part. Pupils from our Portfield Satellite class also took part, with some pupils competing in all events. We hope for the same next summer, as this is a great day for pupils to showcase their sporting talents.
Athletics
The athletics teams have had a very successful year. Carrying on from the good work put in during the cross country season earlier in the year, the school were crowned County Champions at the Pembrokeshire Athletics Championships. From this event we had many pupils who competed at the Dyfed and National Finals.
Moving on from this the pupils competed in the NASUWT Team Cup Competition. In the Pembrokeshire round the Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Middle Boys and Middle girls were all successful in making it through to the Dyfed Finals, which were held at the school. This was a very tough day, but the pupils once again did the school proud and were very competitive. The middle girls team were winners and made it through to the national finals. While competing at the national finals the girls team came 4th, which is a huge honour and shows the amount of effort they have put in over the season.
Goodbye Mr Richards!
A mention here must go to Mr Meredith Richards who is leaving us at the end of the year. Mr Richards has taught in the county for over 30 years in Greenhill, Sir Thomas Picton and now Haverfordwest High. His biggest passion has always been whilst out on the athletics track and he has always put in a huge amount of effort to ensure pupils have the best experience possible. During the Pembrokeshire round of the NASUWT competition Mr Richards was presented with a special thank you gift for all of his hard work over the years. Diolch Mr Richards a phob lwc yn y dyfodol!
Cricket
Although the weather was not always on our side, the school were very proud of 2 of our teams reaching the Pembrokeshire Cricket Finals. The year 7 team lost narrowly in the final to Greenhill, with the players showing a great attitude throughout the game. The year 9’s also reached the final and played Greenhill again. The result was a reverse of the year 7 game with Haverfordwest High beating our Tenby rivals. This meant that the boys went through to the Dyfed finals day in Carmarthen. Here they beat Ysgol y Strade in the semi-final and then went on to play Ysgol Bro Myrddyn in the final. This was an incredibly close game, with the result still in doubt until the last ball of the game. Bro Myrddyn hit 2 runs off the last ball to win by 1 run.
Thank you goes to Mr Dan Bellis for his continued support with Sports Pembrokeshire. The Girls Cricket tournament held at Haverfordwest CC this month saw 31 Girls across 4 teams – double any other School - participate. Congratulations go to our Under 15s team 1 who won their tournament, also winning all four of their games.
Rounders
The year 7, 8, 9 and 10 teams competed in the Pembrokeshire Rounders Tournament during this term. All girls who represented the school played with integrity and gave a lot of effort during the term. On the day, each year group played numerous games against other schools in the county. The Year 9 team ended the day very successfully when they won in the final to be crowned county champions.
Tennis
The Under 13s and Under 14s tennis tournaments took place this term. The Under 13s boys won their event and now progress through to the national finals in September. The girls Under 13s team competed hard all day and, although a young team, they came second overall. In the under 14s competition the boys were successful and will represent the school in the national finals. The girls fought hard during the day and played some great tennis, but were beaten in the final against Greenhill. Onwards and upwards into next year!
Rugby
The focus of the rugby for this half term turned to the girls’ teams. Pupils were given the opportunity to play in various mini tournaments during the term. The term ended with a county tournament where the Under 13s achieved a second place and the Under 15s were crowned county champions. The Under 15s girls also competed against other schools in the region in the regional finals, where again they were crowned champions. This meant that they went to compete in the national finals, which took place in Cardiff Arms Park. This was a great experience for the girls, where they did the school proud.
It has been a great year for rugby in Haverfordwest High, which has seen over 300 pupils play rugby at some level. This has set a solid foundation for the school and we know that next year will see all of our pupils progress even further in their skills and achievements.
And a final mention goes to our very own Miss Rosie Mankee who, as part of Swansea Women's RFC helped bring home the National Cup!
As you can see it has been a very busy end to a very busy year within the PE department. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the pupils who have competed but just as importantly the staff that have given up numerous hours to ensure that the pupils in the school have been given a variety of opportunities.
Diolch pawb a phob lwc y flwyddyn nesaf!
Two thirds of the Year Group made the most of their opportunity to engage in the world of work first hand. Employers spoke of their pleasure to work with our year 10 students during the week, finding pupils to be: “Polite, well mannered and always willing”; “an asset to the team”; “Enthusiastic with an eye for detail”. Many employers wished the pupils luck and some pupils were even offered a job when they turn 16 - what an outcome! Congratulations all of you.
Meanwhile back in school pupils had a variety of sessions with employers such as Valero, Bluestone and Entrepreneurs from Big Ideas Wales. A visit to College allowed pupils to think about future careers such as construction and catering. On Thursday the Army brought a range of team building activities and pupils worked with Really Pro on some pitches for ideas to improve our tiny corner of the world.
If pupils are interested in going on an additional period of work experience with the Army, the dates are as follows:
Army work experience dates include:
- 4-7 November 2019
- 13-16 January 2020
- 27-30 January 2020
- 16-19 March 2020
Whilst on the course students may participate in some of the following activities:
- Learn how to do Drill
- Cook in the field
- Field craft
- Patrols
- Build a Basha
- Assault Courses
The courses are not regimentally specific and are designed to give students who are interested in a career in The British Army an insight into Army Life.
A huge thank you to pupils, parents, staff, and employers for a fabulous week!
Skills Challenge Wales - Coaching Successes
Hats off to our very industrious Year 10 students who successfully completed their two days of Community Challenge work undertaking coaching sessions. As part of the SSC programme they were tasked with designing coaching sessions to develop the skills of our learners and they certainly raised themselves to the challenge! We had highly professional sessions delivered on ethics, cake decoration, improving personal fitness, mental health awareness, drug misuse, as well as improving literacy and numeracy skills - to name but a few! It is fair to say that our Year 8 pupils learnt a great deal of new skills, and that Year 10 truly appreciated the preparation, patience and professionalism needed to coach teams of students to a high standard. Congratulations to all those who passed this element of the SCC with flying colours - they have all now completed another 15% of this qualification which aims to develop and assess a wide range of essential and employability skills, make learning relevant and set in real-life contexts for real-life purposes, and provide opportunities for purposeful, meaningful and engaging learning experiences.
To kick off our Sixth Form Summer School we were delighted that six lecturers from Aberystwyth University could provide us with sample lectures in a range of subjects. In a “Land on Mars” Physics lecture we were challenged to think about why and how scientists send exploratory rovers to Mars. A Criminal Law Workshop asked: 'Self-defence or no defence – you be the judge'. Both Criminology and History highlighted the role of the media in shaping, either our behaviour, or our interpretation of HIstory. Our belief in our own perception was challenged in a Psychology lecture and the Environmental Science lecturer brought in some carnivorous moss! Exciting stuff.
UCAS day followed this with an opportunity to log on to UCAS ( University and Colleges Admissions Service), begin to draft personal statements; consider what to look out for and to grill a panel of four students about topics such as accommodation, finance and the transition to University life.
Before May half-term we said goodbye to our year 13 cohort who completed their A-Level Skills Challenge Certificate with their Individual Projects. Once again, an impressive array of titles were offered by our most senior pupils reflecting the comprehensive independent endeavour undertaken in pursuit of extended research. We wish them the very best of futures as they leave us to continue their own journeys in following their obvious passions.
Paving the Way Towards a New Curriculum for Wales
Global Goals Sustainability Summit 2019
As part of the Year 6-7 transition programme, Year 7 pupils played an important role in the Global Gaols for Sustainable Development Sustainability Summit in June 2019, this year hosted at Haverfordwest High VC School, Portfield site.
Year 7 Humanities Ambassadors undertook a range of tasks in preparation for the Summit including writing letters to publicise the event, choosing the 2019 logo from a range of entries submitted by our primary partners and hosting the event itself. They enjoyed welcoming their primary school friends and invited guests from Pembrokeshire County Council and Haverfordwest Town Council for a real celebration of Year 6 achievements and commitment to sustainability. The Ambassadors were also pleased to welcome Stephen Crabb MP later in the week to discuss the event and how they were making a positive impact towards a more sustainable future at both school and on a wider level.
Tour of Pembrokeshire - Summer Term Innovation
Pupils were then taken on a ‘Mystery Tour’ to some special places around our county where they became tourists for the day and participated in a workshop run by Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks Authority. Locations included Carew Castle, Freshwater East beach,Bishops Palace at Lamphey, Newgale beach, St, David’s, Castell Henllys and Goodwick. This built on work completed on their own perceptions of our county and how these might compare to those of tourists who visit this area.
In groups, Year 7 were tasked with creating their own ‘Tour of Pembrokeshire’ in their Humanities lessons. The unit is part of the new Curriculum for Wales and was designed to help pupils to develop their skills of communication, teamwork and independent enquiry as well as using literacy, numeracy and ICT to enhance their learning. Finally, groups used their oracy skills to present their tours to their peers. The winning groups then presented to a panel of judges with the overall winners enjoying their trip around Ramsey island. This has been an exciting new development for the Humanities Area of Learning and we are looking forward to collaborating on the project next year with our colleagues across the school.
The prize of a boat trip was donated by Ffion Rees, wildlife expert and director of Falcon Boats in St David’s as a special prize for the winning group in our new Tour of Pembrokeshire Humanities unit. Ffion came and launched the project in an assembly where she gave an incredibly inspiring talk, educating pupils about the wildlife living around the Pembrokeshire coastline helping them to see what’s so special about our county. Ffion also helped pupils to understand what they needed to think about when planning their own ‘Tour of Pembrokeshire’ by explaining key features of her business.
The competition and special prize winners are going to be able to venture out around Ramsey Island on a boat trip in our new Humanities ‘Tour of Pembrokeshire’ Unit. We are extremely grateful for Ffion’s generous donation and specialist input. She also donated a copy of her book, ‘Ramsey Island and Beyond’ to the school library. Her boat company ‘Falcon Boats’ offer a variety of boat trips exploring some of the beauties and wonders of the stunning coastline of Pembrokeshire and its islands. Highlights include seabirds by the thousand, peregrines, chough dolphins, seals, porpoises and colourful and other-worldy jellyfish. As well as marine life there are towering sea cliffs, deep sea caves and some of the fastest tidal races in the UK. For more information visit www.falconboats.co.uk
Building Active Citizens @HHVCS
Our youth workers, Suzanne Moses and Ell Lewis, have been extremely busy this term with our Prince's Trust and PSD students who have been out in our local community on beach cleans and river bank litter picks, all in the name of making our area a better place to live.
They've also been running a surfing course for our Year 9 GRIT students in conjunction with Outer Reef Surf School. Well done to all participants - we hope to see you sign up for our Well-being Fridays surf sessions next year!
Continued Support for Get the Boys a Lift
Well done to all of our students who took part in the charity community touch rugby event to support the efforts of the Get the Boys a Lift campaign, all in aid of raising awareness of mental health issues which are affecting young people. This team is currently in the process of providing a space for young people to access support and speak to personal about matters such as their mental health, drug use, and bereavements - a noble cause indeed.
Raising Money for Local Causes
Some of our very selfless students have also given up their time this term to take part in a charity netball tournament to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young in memory of Sarah Thomas. Everyone bought in to the spirit of the day, even wearing the full netball kit - well done boys!
A Taste of our Sporting Stars
We are very lucky to be able to celebrate the achievements of our pupils outside of school - their dedication to their respective sporting fields in addition to their focus on achieving academically is to be commended. Clockwise from left to right we have: our school equestrian team, Euan Dyer representing Wales Under 16s Hockey, Harry Twigg umpiring at Sophia Gardens, Joe Phillips in the Wales Under 14s cricket team, Niamh Edwards in the Wales Regional Sports Acron Gymnastics team, Libi Phillips who is in the Commonwealth Ladies wheelchair basket ball team and now British number 1 in the 100 meters, Hannah Pratt, Carys Jones and Hannah Williams representing West Wales in netball, Tyree Thompson Tyree a gold medalist in the Welsh Athletics Junior Championships and Welsh Schools Track and Field Championships who has been selected to compete for Wales in the 100m hurdles, Sophie Jamieson in The Showing Register, our Pembrokeshire Harriers stars including Dorian Pawlett Welsh Shot Putt champion, our Year 9 and 10 rugby champions, Connor Whitworth, Will Lewis and Owen Llewelyn who have been selected to train with the Scarlets West U16 squad this summer, Gracie Griffiths the national champion in the 1 km walk, Dan Davies our two-time Welsh record holding weight lifter, and brothers Ali Dyer and Euan Dyer who played for Swansea U15 and U18s in the National finals at Newtown.
These are just some of the hugely talented students we are privileged to have as part of the HHVCS family -well done to each and every one of you.
New for 2019 - Well-being Fridays!
Our Well-being Friday Afternoons, which begin in September, give all pupils a chance to focus on their own health and emotional well-being. Formal lessons will finish at 1.30pm, and pupils have the option to leave school to spend time pursuing their own hobbies or stay to participate in one of the activities on offer. Lunch will be available (if required) for all pupils and for those going home buses will leave at 1.55pm. A reminder: pupils who do not wish to stay for lunch can leave the site at 1.30pm. HaverFEST in Full Swing!
Thursday marked the whole school celebration of our first year at HHVCS and what an event it was! Pupils from both sites joined each other at Prendergast to revel in awesome bands, outstanding musical treats and to indulge in some well-deserved memory-making of a very successful first year together. There were food stalls, festival make-up artists, the top radio DJ Toby Ellis and, of course, plenty of smiles which filled the field. An enormous 'THANK YOU' goes to Kelly Monroe of Really Pro who has been tireless in her support of HHVCS and instrumental in putting together this very fitting end to our first year - we couldn't have done it without you, Kelly!
Thankyou for organising this - my daughter has come home saying she loved it!
The whole staff and Governing Body at Haverfordwest High VC School are very proud of every single pupil and their achievements this year. If the contents of this newsletter - and our previous editions - as well as the daily updates on our Twitter and Facebook page are anything to go by, HHVCS is firmly on the path to success and achieving the excellence we desire.
Well done HHVCS and ReallyPro. What an excellent afternoon bringing all pupils and staff together for HaverFest!
We would like to also extend our thanks to all who have tirelessly supported us in our first year - to our pupils, parents and carers, community members, local businesses, outside agencies, support staff, teaching staff, the senior leadership team, governors, trustees, Councillors and advisers, thank you for being with us on this journey. We look forward to working with you all again in September and building on the successes of our first year.
