Vassilis Zikas and team receive $8M from AlgorAND Foundation
AIMS TO TRANSFORM BLOCKCHAIN ECOSYSTEM AT GLOBAL SCALE
The project, titled MEGA-ACE (Multidisciplinary Educational Global Alliance for Algorand Center of Excellence), is a multi-institute collaboration network led and coordinated by primary investigator Vassilis Zikas, associate professor of computer science and security researcher who leads the Purdue Blockchain Lab (The PuB). Also from Purdue is Assistant Professor Alex Psomas – both Zikas and Psomas will contribute to the project in cryptography, distributed computing, and economics.
ALEX PSOMAS EARNS NSF CAREER AWARD
Computer science assistant professor and theoretical researcher, Alex Psomas, received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). His work is titled, “Incentives, Fairness, and Efficiency without Monetary Transfers.” His project takes aim at several key theoretical questions in three complementary areas; foundations of mechanism design without money, mechanism design with imperfect rationality, and mechanism design with imperfect expressivity.
Elisa Bertino elected vP of the ACM
Elisa Bertino, Samuel D. Conte Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University was elected Vice President of the ACM. She shared her priorities for the organization going forward. “I would like to see ACM serve the field in a broad and multidisciplinary way,” she said. “Our goals should also include broadening diversity in our field, supporting younger researchers, and fostering more open access to ACM’s resources. Last, but not least, we must make sure that ACM stays technically relevant by organizing workshops and conferences on emerging technologies and applications."
Bedrich Benes elected Fellow of EUROGRAPHICS
Associate Professor Bedrich Benes has been elected Fellow of the European Association for Computer Graphics (Eurographics) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to procedural modeling and simulation of natural phenomena, and his comprehensive service to the community and the Eurographics Association in particular.
Purdue grad focused on data science and computational science research named Pauling Fellow at PNNL
Dr. S M Ferdous, a postdoctoral research associate and doctoral graduate working with Professor Alex Pothen in Purdue University’s Department of Computer Science, was named a recipient of the prestigious Linus Pauling Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship awarded by PNNL.
Purdue’s algorithmic programming team advances to world finals
Three Purdue students (Minh Nguyen, Devin Qu, and Trung Dang) proved their prowess at solving algorithmic problems and were rewarded with advancing to the world final competition. The students finished in ninth place out of 50 teams in the International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC) at the North America Championship (NAC 2022). The team is coached by Professors Gustavo Rodriguez-Rivera and Ninghui Li.
Three Purdue CS athletes honored as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars
Three student-athletes student-athletes earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition for their academic excellence during the 2021-22 school year. Brennan Doyle, a junior and computer science major, is a member of the the Purdue University Wrestling team. Alex Frey, a sophmore and computer science major, is a member of the Purdue University Cross Country team. Ian Hunter, (BS '22) graduated with triple majors in computer science, acutuarial science, and applied statistics, he maintained a cumulative 4.0 for the year. Now enrolled as a graduate student, he is a member of the Purdue University Cross Country team.

The USENIX Security Symposium brings together researchers, practitioners, system administrators, system programmers, and others interested in the latest advances in the security and privacy of computer systems and networks.

AN ERA OF GROWTH
In the profession of computer science, demand for our majors continues to grow - once again we have broken our own record for the number of applications for freshman admissions at 6,200. At the start of fall classes, 577 new computer science and data science students joined our previous classes for a total 2,207 undergraduates.
This year, freshman women students represent 25% of the undergraduate population and women are 23% among all undergraduate classes.
