What is GivingTuesday?
The last Tuesday in November is GivingTuesday—a global movement where individuals come together to give back to causes they care about! GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea…a day that encourages people to do good and give! We are excited to participate in this amazing movement and help make an impact!

ND Loyal Roll Call
Nick Martinez ‘19
One of my favorite quotes about Notre Dame that sums up my experience is from Lou Holtz: “Those who know Notre Dame, no explanation is necessary. Those who don’t, no explanation will suffice.”
I look back at my Notre Dame experience with gratitude and joy. Now that I’m a few years out, I think I am just beginning to realize the impact of the lifelong friendships made, the one-of-a-kind experiences I had, and the top-tiered education provided at Our Lady’s University.
Dorm: 4 amazing years on campus in O’Neill (3 years in 4A; 1 year as an RA in 2A)
Major: Economics
Graduating class: 2019
Hometown: Alsip, IL (just outside Chicago’s southern city limits)
Current location: While I was in San Francisco after graduation, I’ve since returned home to the Chicagoland area while working remotely as a result of COVID-19.
What do you enjoy most about being an ND Loyal Volunteer: I’m not sure I will ever be able to give back as much as I took from Notre Dame; that said, being an ND Loyal Volunteer is a small way for me to continue to give back to the place that gave me so much and remain connected with campus after graduation.
Favorite ND memory: It would be difficult for me to isolate a single moment as my favorite. Whether it was helping design and manufacture The Shirt, MC-ing Junior Parent Weekend, running Miss ND, clashing some cymbals at Hockey Band, or hosting ‘Cookies & Milk’ nights in my section as an RA in O’Neill, my days and nights were always jam packed with activities and liveliness. While the big events stick out, the little moments in between like seeing the golden dome while walking to class, picking out a late night snack at the candy wall in LaFun, or even hanging out with my section mates in the section lounge aren’t to be forgotten.
Fun fact: My birthday is on Saint Patrick’s Day, so I’m convinced that makes me a tad bit more Irish, right?!
Favorite fundraising or engagement tactic: I’ve found that many of my constituents prefer to sign up for automatically recurring donations each month. Many may still be unaware of how easy it is to sign up for automatic donations each month. Others may not realize the impact those smaller donations may have. At the cost of a coffee or two each month, a big impact can still be had. Reminding people of that is key.
5 Reasons Why Philanthropy is Important
“Philanthropy” is defined as goodwill toward other people. That includes monetary gifts, volunteering, and other humanitarian acts. Why does philanthropy matter? Here are five reasons:
#1. Philanthropy strengthens community
Philanthropy fuels a person’s involvement in their community. Whether it’s giving time or money, philanthropy brings people together to support a cause that’s bigger than themselves. In a society where giving freely is common, there’s a much stronger unity and sense of belonging.
#2. Philanthropy is contagious
Philanthropy is important because it has a snowball effect. When an individual contributes to a cause, others around them take notice. Philanthropists often wield considerable influence in their communities. When they use that influence for good, it has a significant impact.
#3. Philanthropy helps you network
Philanthropy lets you connect with like-minded individuals and expand your network. This is a mutually-beneficial system where people rely on each other and grow together.
#4. Philanthropy benefits mental and physical health
People who feel like they have a purpose and are making a positive impact on the world tend to have better emotional health. Research shows that generosity can reduce stress and symptoms of depression. When volunteering with others, philanthropy can also reduce a person’s loneliness. Stress manifests itself physically as headaches, high blood pressure, and even a weakened immune system. With less stress, your physical health can turn a corner.
#5. Philanthropy supports underfunded causes
Philanthropic individuals and businesses help fill in the gaps by supporting causes and organizations that don’t use government funding. Without philanthropy, many needs in society would go unmet.
By giving back, you offer hope for those who need it most. You can provide a chance for a better tomorrow for future students and help transform the world into a better, happier place.
Thank you for your volunteer efforts!
