Kia ora e te whānau, Week 7 already! This is often the time of term when people's energy starts to dip so it has been nice to have a couple of cooler days this week to help us keep energised for learning (and play). The learning in action at Nukumea so far this year was captured by Mr Cowie in a video he made for our Whānau Connect afternoon. If you missed this event, you can watch the video below:
Along with some cooler weather recently, we have noticed a bit of sickness creeping in. Please remember to update the school on any absences through Hero. We also ask that if your child has been unwell enough that they miss 3 or more days of school, that you try to get a medical certificate for them.

Literacy at Nukumea
Our goals for reading and writing are aligned with the refreshed NZ curriculum. You will now find that our reading and writing goals are split into two distinct sets of goals.
For reading, you will find our Word Recognition goals, which explicitly supports the teaching of decoding through phonics knowledge and fluency. Our other set of reading goals are based around Reading Comprehension and Critical Analysis, which are skills and knowledge that develop over a lifetime, every time we encounter new topics. Our students focus on developing an understanding of vocabulary that aligns with our concept each term, alongside discussing the purpose of texts and the author's intended message.
Our writing goals are split into two areas. Writing Composition, which focuses on a students ability to write for a purpose and move from sentence level writing to writing longer texts within the genres of entertaining, informing and opinions. And Transcription Skills, Writing Craft and Writing Processes, which focuses on a student's ability to understand spelling patterns, develop their handwriting and work through the writing process.
You can learn more about what we teach in literacy and how you can help at home by reading the one page overviews on our website.
Basketball
Our 3 basketball teams have all now finished their grading games and started their actual competitions. It has been awesome watching the progress in their training sessions here and then seeing the better results come through. All 3 teams have seen their early losses turn into draws and wins, including the strongest result yet of the Knicks winning 20-0!
The Knicks were also privileged last week to have Nicole, a referee from the league, join their training to teach some basic skills and go over the rules of the game. The kids had a great time learning from her expertise and practicing their shots! Nicole is incredibly patient and has a wonderful way of sharing her wealth of basketball knowledge and expertise.
Netball
We are gathering interest for children who are interested in forming Nukumea Netball Teams (all year groups), to play against other local schools. This is run by Netball North Harbour, and games are played at Edith Hopper Park in Manly.
