Dear parents and carers,

At the weekend we were all shocked and saddened by the incident at Chalkwell Park. I know it has left our community heartbroken following the loss of such a young girl. Our deepest and heart felt condolence goes to the family of Leonna Ruka and all who were impacted by the tragic event. We would also like to share our wishes of recovery to the child who remains in hospital.

Some members of our Darlinghurst community were witness to the incident or at the park that day and we have given comfort to those who have wanted to talk, or not to talk and just have a space to go and reflect. We respect that not all parents have spoken about the incident with their children and we have taken the decision to not discuss what happened. However, please rest assured that we are here for the children should they need us. Our pastoral team, teachers and LSAs continue to be a listening ear should they need it.

This tragedy showed the sense of belonging in our community and the critical role of our emergency services and the air ambulance (a charity funded service). Our thoughts go to those who gave aid, including members of both cricket clubs, a football team and many members of the community who gave their support.

Finally, our thoughts go to the school communities of the children involved.

Flowers have been laid at Chalkwell Park on behalf of the staff and children of Darlinghurst Academy.

Out of respect and showing our sense of belonging, all other news will be postponed and shared next week. This week our focus is on our community, the Darlinghurst family and the family of Leonna Ruka.
