the flock in formation Newsletter - Summer 2025

Coaches Corner

In just a handful of days, the 2025-2026 WAC MBB season & school year will begin. We cannot wait to welcome back our returning players and introduce eight newcomers to The Flock. More on that in a moment.

In my own life, the summer has been defined by a special addition: my wife and I welcomed Josephine Rowan Begly to the world in late April. 'Jo' is fired up to join The Flock and can't wait to get to her first game in a few months. Below is a recent photo from a trip outside Philly, home to many current members of the team.

The summer has also been defined by improvement. Improvement by the players: working diligently on their skills, mindsets, and conditioning. Improvement from the coaching staff: learning new systems and hours of film study. Improvement from our growing Flock Nation! We recently welcomed 30+ wonderful youth players to WAC for camp and it was a joy.

This newsletter is full of information and updates. One I personally must mention is a formal invite for all to the Wild Goose Classic, November 8-9 (Saturday/Sunday) at Washington College. We're bringing back this signature event for the first time since 1996 and bridging our rich past to a promising present and future. We hope you can make it.

The Wild Goose classic returns

It felt like the right time to bring back a Washington College MBB tradition: The Wild Goose Classic. Imagine the year is 1977 and you are in the front row of a close game between Washington College and St. Marys (MD). Halftime awaits with a goose calling contest! The gym is packed with students and locals alike. For many years, Washington College hosted the Wild Goose, highlighted by the glory years in 1987-1990.

This year you are all invited as we bring back a timeless tradition and welcome many classes of WAC MBB back to campus.

Weekend Schedule:

Game 1: Washington College vs. Bard College 3 PM

Game 2: Sarah Lawrence College vs. Immaculata University 5 PM

Continuity with Coach King

The past three seasons, we have been extremely fortunate to have Coach Chris King as our lead assistant coach. Coach King is one of the top recruiters in DIII and has a very bright future as a head coach. However, what sets coach apart is the loyalty and care he puts into the Washington College program. Here are a few thoughts from current players on Coach King.

The combination of Coach King's basketball intellect and unrelenting positivity has significantly helped this program build itself up in the past two years. - Max Portnoy
Coach King always brings the energy to every practice and sometimes even laces it up and brings sauce too. He always helps and mentors us on and off the court- Anthony Seoage
Great coach, always pushes us to be the best version of ourselves.- Ty Woodland
Great player coach who connects with us but also really cares about the little details that all add up.- Davis Bland
Coach King gives us knowledge on other players to add to our game and he looks our for us when we don't ask for it. A great man and coach.- Nolan Waldon.

Another season and more chances to improve and grow as a program. Thank you, Coach!

Welcome, Coach Brian Cotter!

Brian Cotter has recently joined the Washington College Men’s Basketball staff as an assistant coach. Brian has spent the past 15 years as an assistant basketball coach at Saints Peter and Paul High School in Easton, Maryland. During those years, Coach Cotter helped Saints Peter and Paul reach the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Class C Championship 8 times, while winning the MIAA Class C Championship four (4) of those eight (8) years.

He has worked for the past 40 years as a healthcare executive and is currently self-employed as a nonprofit consultant.

“Driven by a passion for mentorship and basketball, I am excited to join the coaching staff as an assistant basketball coach at Washington College. My journey in basketball began as a student-athlete, where I developed a deep appreciation for teamwork, discipline, and strategic thinking. At Saints Peter and Paul High School, I honed my coaching skills, working with diverse groups of student athletes and helping them reach their full potential academically and athletically.
I look forward to contributing to our team’s success and to supporting Coach Begly and Coach King as they build upon the success of the past 2 seasons.”
