Caught Between a Rock and a Good Place

Along Grizzly Creek, a young family carried more than just a backpack

While awkwardly wrestling with my large format camera and trying not to draw attention to my own fumbling setup process, I noticed a young couple approaching along the trail. I initiated the greeting. The usual hiking nod, a smile, a quick exchange. Then the conversation continued. I had come from the east. They had come from the west. Our paths crossed briefly along Grizzly Creek Trail within Glenwood Canyon. The couple, Jen and Austin, were carrying a child-carrier backpack with their very young child as they made their way upstream along Grizzly Creek. What stayed with me afterward was not simply that they had started a small granola company called Hearth & Crunch. It was that they were carrying their products with them on the trail. There was something honest about that. A young family from New Castle, Colorado, hiking with their child while carrying samples of the very thing they are trying to build. No elaborate sales pitch. No storefront. Just effort, belief, and a willingness to place their work directly into people's hands. Young people should absolutely push beyond comfort, extend their capabilities, and see how far an idea can go. Most worthwhile journeys begin before there is certainty, before there is recognition, and long before there is success. Their granola began as a cottage industry from home. The word hearth itself has long been associated with home, family life, and the warmth of the fireside. That spirit seems woven into what they are building. I purchased the Alpine Maple blend. One bag. A mistake. I should have purchased the other varieties as well. The packaging itself caught my attention. A sturdy resealable pouch in a simple kraft-paper tone, designed more for function than flash. The earthy presentation feels very Colorado, reflecting the outdoors without trying too hard. Inside is a nutritious mix packed with protein, texture, seeds, oats, and crunch, the kind of trail food an outdoor enthusiast can toss into a backpack, enjoy along the way, and keep moving. For now, they are selling locally in Colorado and online, but after meeting them, tasting their product, and seeing the determination behind it, I would not be surprised if their reach someday extends much farther.

Caught Between a Rock and a Good Place

As our conversation continued, I placed my purchase onto the subject I had originally stopped to photograph: a rock that had remained in place while a weathered tree, having survived the Grizzly Creek Fire years earlier, slowly grew around it. As I framed the image, I jokingly searched for a phrase. "Caught between a rock and a..." Before I could finish, Austin smiled and replied, "Caught between a rock and a good place." The photograph suddenly became more than a photograph. It became a reminder that every business starts somewhere. Sometimes not in a boardroom, warehouse, or retail space, but on a kitchen counter, around a family table, and occasionally on a hiking trail with a young child, a handful of samples, and the willingness to keep moving forward. Perhaps our paths crossed by accident. Perhaps not. Either way, I wanted to share their story. If you enjoy supporting people who are building something from the ground up, take a look at what they are doing. There may be shipping costs depending on where you live, but that is often part of supporting small makers before they become large companies.
