Flexibility

A Middle School Career Skills Activity

Flexibility- the quality of bending easily without breaking

“Flexibility is the key to stability.” – John Wooden

Why is Flexible Thinking important?

Imagine you are walking and you reach a “road closed” sign; you have no idea where you are or where to go next. You might get angry and consider taking the closed road regardless. You might panic about what to do next and call someone for help. Or you might simply sit there and not know where to go next.

Flexible thinking is the ability to shift thinking in response to a switch in rules, or to new or unexpected situations. It means you are capable of bending easily without breaking

• Flexible Thinking: The ability to think about something in a new way.

• Inflexible Thinking: Only thinking about something one way and not willing or able to listen to other points of view.

Ways to Develop Flexibility in Your Thinking

Seek out new experiences

Practice thinking creatively

Don't always take the easy way

Challenge yourself to do things in a new way

Shift Your Focus

How many times does the letter "o" appear in the following sentence?

The brain filters out objects that we've seen many times before when they are presumed not to be relevant to a current goal or task.

The correct answer

Eight times- you may not have seen all eight because your attention filter doesn't always attend to data that's too familiar to stand out -- such as the "o" in out, not, to, and or.

“Be flexible, but stick to your principles.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
