Reading Girls' School newsletter - 5 JuLY 2024

Principal's message

We have had another incredible week with a varity of activities taking place among all the teaching and learning that goes on. The Duke of Edinbrugh expedition last weekend was a great success and the students were a credit to themselves and the schools . Their resilance and perserverance all paid off as they completed the expedition, and while some did admit it was hard, they all stated how proud they were of their achievement. I wish to thank Mr Jones for leading on Duke of Ediburgh but all the staff who attended the weekend to support the students and ensure they managed to finish the course.

Year 10 also had a successful Personal Development day with a varity of workshops linked to their personal development. Our students were entered for a Business Studies competition and I am so proud that one of our groups came runners up and one of our students won the competition. They all received monetary rewards for their hard work. They are to be congratulated for their creativity and initiative.

Today we sadly have to say good bye to Ms Hargrave. I don't think there are many parents who do not know the significant contribution she has made to the life of Reading Girls' School. She has been here for 15 years and has decided that she needs a new challenge. We all thanked her today for all the hard work and commitment she has shown to the girls over the many years she has been at RGS. The whole school clapped her during the day to say a huge 'thank you' and to demonstrate their gratitude for the kindness and support she has shown them. Ms Hargrave we wish you all the very best for the future!

Finally, The Secondary Parent Trustee election is now open for voting. Please find below the voting link. The election closes at 12pm on Friday 12 July. Secondary Parent Trustee election.

I wish you all a restful weekend.

Kind regards

Marika Farrugia, Principal

Personal Development Day - Year 10

The year 10 Personal Development Day this week included sessions on personal finance with NatWest encouraging students to save as well as spend, and live within their budget. There was also workshop about interview skills by the Education Business Partnership which was generously funded by REDA, Reading's Economy & Destination Agency. A group of year 10s also had a follow up with SSE after their wonderful visit to their offices.

Scholars programme - Year 10

The year 10 students involved in the Scholars programme had their last visit to the University together with the other schools involved.

They received personal feedback on their research posters and had a graduation ceremony for the project. Prizes were awarded for outstanding and two students from Reading Girls' School received awards: Kathy Githinji's research poster was Highly Commended and Katherine Young received an award for Best Use of Study Skills.

As well as considering options for the future there was also a wonderful picnic lunch in the beautiful grounds of the London Road campus.

"We enjoyed the events as they were interactive and we loved the campus tours particularly the library, which was beautiful and we would have liked to stay there longer. The programme told us about our options - not just university but other courses. We were treated like university students on our visit and we liked learning skills and finding out how work is marked at university. We also made friends and got to know students from other classes, and helped one another when we were doing our research posters" - Katherine Young

Congratulations to the following year 9 students who took part in a Business Studies competition on Thursday in Buckinghamshire with Zebra Technologies, alongside 3 other schools and beating out almost 400 students across the country to take both 1st and 2nd place! They were accompanied by Mrs Thompson and Miss Tiernan and they presented their amazing ideas in front of a panel of judges from both Zebra Technologies and their educational partners. The judges were amazed by their work and praised them highly for their effort, innovation and team work.

1st Place – Amaryllis Katz

Ms P Boyd's Skydive fundraiser for Helen & Douglas House on the 17 August 2024 As a teacher and camp activity leader I love helping children achieve their goals. Helen & Douglas House are an amazing charity and a place where families can make the most of their time together and create happy memories during their children’s short lives. Please help me raise £500 for such a noble cause while I fall out of a plane.
