Wayne Derman, is a Medical Doctor and Professor in Sports and Exercise Medicine, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and a Guest Professor at Lund University. Prof Derman is also the director of the FIFA Sports Medicine Centre, South Africa and the Medical Director of the International Paralympic Committee.   In his talk “Game On: Tackling infections in Sports with a Winning Strategy” Professor Derman will discuss how we in sports medicine often tend to focus on sports injuries rather than illnesses. Yet, several epidemiological studies show that the burden of illnesses is higher compared to injuries in most sports settings. Most illnesses are not severe, but illnesses such as infections affect athletes’ performances, and the risk of illness is of special concern prior and during large competitions. Also, the covid-19 pandemic has opened for many new questions related to infections in sports.

Joanne Kemp is a Professor and the deputy director at the Latrobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. She is the lead of the centre’s hip pain research program and the academic director of the Latrobe University clinical trials platform. She is also a Sport & Exercise Physiotherapist of 30 years’ experience, fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists and editor at the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Her research program is focused on the management of hip pain in adults, especially interventions that can slow the progression and reduce the symptoms associated with hip pain and early hip osteoarthritis.   In her talk “Hip pain in athletes – current evidence and optimizing treatment pathways”, she will discuss the classification of hip pain in athletes, common clinical presentations, and treatment pathways, including surgical and non-surgical approaches.
