LYDON CONTRACTING LTD LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR UTILITIES & CIVIL ENGINEERING EXPERTS

Welcome to the June 2024 newsletter from Lydon Contracting Ltd. We're proud of the work we do and want to share our latest news, useful information and staff updates.

Digging deep

June was a busy month in Stansted where we completed the HDD crossing under Stansted Brook and finished the duct installation through the road closure on Gipsy Lane.

We were also tasked with the HDD crossing under the M11. This has taken a lot of co-ordination with local authorities and National Highways. Before permission to drill was granted we needed to carry out 10m boreholes, a full Geotechnical report, Drainage Survey, removal & installation of the vehicle restraint barrier and the monitoring of the carriageway before, during and after the Drill.

We are pleased to report that the Directional Drill was successfully carried out with no issues.

Charging on

Lydon Contracting is proud to be part of the rapid growth of high-power electric vehicle charging network across the UK. We work closely with several ICPs and have delivered 6 charging hubs this year. Our next major Gridserve site has started at Mollies Diner, Bucklands where we will be installing 11 new chargers giving 22 spaces dedicated to electric car charging.

This site has a complex ducting system, along with the challenges of always keeping the Motel and Diner open and accessible. More to come from this project in the coming months!

Strong foundations

We are making good progress on our Primary Substation build at Stanton Cross in Wellingborough. All substructure works have been completed, including casting of the transformer bund walls, transformer plinths and switchroom foundation works.

Water tests have also been carried out successfully on the transformer bunds, so these will now be filled with pebbles.

The backfilling around the substation has been completed enabling the construction of the reinforced concrete beam for the perimeter fence, gate foundations, and construction of the brickwork superstructure to commence.

Underground drainage and electrical ducting to the boundary of the site will be installed during construction of the switchroom superstructure.

BT Infrastructure Diversion

Works on the next phase of the new BT Infrastructure around the A45 East way near Birmingham were completed this month. The works included the construction of 3No. JRF110 concrete chambers which had to be constructed at night (20:00-06:00) under a road closure due to the works being on the main exit road from the busy NEC arena.

On the Road again

Works commenced at the end of May and continued into June for the new dual HV duct installation and associated 11kV cable installation in Perry Barr Birmingham.

These reinforcement works are for the newly built National Express Bus depot in Perry Barr Birmingham, to reinforce the existing HV network to enable the depot to install new EV charging infrastructure for their new fleet of electric buses.

This will enable National Express to play their part in making the city a more carbon neutral city of the future.

Training day

This month eight of our site Operatives completed Sygma Solutions CAT & Genny Training. The training is a full day course and included:

  • Understanding the capabilities of the equipment
  • Purpose of using the Genny and CAT
  • Dangers of not using or incorrectly using the Genny and CAT.
  • Understanding of Utility Plans
  • Visual on-site checks
  • Pre-use checks
  • Transmitter Connection, Clamping, Capacitance & Nulling
  • Depth Estimates and checks
  • Induction Sweeps
  • Site Marking Up

A practical test and exam was included during the training to ensure proficiency of the Operatives.

Feedback regarding the course overall has been very positive, and it has been agreed that everyone undertaking the course no matter their competency level had learnt something to improve location and avoidance of underground services.
