The STEP-UPP Retail Class had the opportunity to engage with the people, produce, and passion that make this industry so special. It was a true celebration of Food, Farming, Fellowship, and Education! From microgreens to watermelons, with stops for peaches and fresh sweet corn along the way, our class got an up-close look at a wide range of crops and operations. The tour was not only a feast for the senses but also a powerful educational experience, connecting future produce leaders with some of the most innovative and dedicated growers in the region. PAYH ANNUAL BIKE RIDE - JUNE 21-27, 2025

🚴‍♂️ The Boys Are Back in Town! 🙌

"After an incredible week of determination, teamwork, and faith, they returned safely to the Youth Home, escorted by the Toombs County Sheriff's Office. Thank you to those men & women who daily protect and serve us.
As they turned onto the final stretch, our staff lined the roadside, cheering them in with heartfelt hugs, handshakes, and applause. We shared a meal, celebrated their accomplishment, and bid farewell to the incredible volunteers who walked (and rode) alongside them every mile of the way.
We cannot thank our volunteers enough—their selfless dedication and time away from their own families made this ride possible. And to our faithful partners and friends who contributed financially, thank you for standing with us!
Though the ride is finished, the mission continues. There’s still time to support these young men and the life-changing work happening at the Paul Anderson Youth Home."

Southeast Produce Council’s Next Generation Leadership Academy Kicks Off 2025 Learning Year with Retreat at Stone Mountain, Georgia

NGLA welcomed to the home of Rick and Julie Estess, sponsored by RPE and SEPC

SEPC proudly launched its 2025 Next Generation Leadership Academy (NGLA) with an inspiring and immersive retreat at the historic Stone Mountain, Georgia. This retreat marked the official beginning of the Academy’s learning year, gathering a dynamic group of rising stars from across the fresh produce industry.

The cohort includes a balanced roster from notable retail and foodservice organizations to influential grower-shippers—intentionally investing in a better future. Class members engaged in powerful discussions, strategic leadership sessions, and team-building experiences designed to spark vulnerability, innovation, and meaningful connection.

NGLA Visits Soli Organics Facility in Anderson, SC; NGLA Tours Vertical Farming Operations of Soli Organics
“We believe in investing in the future of this industry by equipping tomorrow’s leaders with the tools and relationships they need to thrive,” said SEPC President and CEO David Sherrod. “This retreat sets the tone for a year of deep learning, cross-sector collaboration, and transformational leadership development.”

Set against the backdrop of Stone Mountain’s strong and natural beauty, the experience emphasized leadership through purpose, reflection, and peer engagement. Participants shared their personal journeys, explored the evolving landscape of fresh produce, and established the foundational trust that will carry through the program’s year-long curriculum.

In its third year, the NGLA has become a signature SEPC initiative, designed to cultivate the next wave of leaders who will guide the produce industry with courage, character, and connection. With sessions planned throughout the year focusing on personal leadership development, industry innovation, and strategic thinking, the program builds toward graduation at SEPC’s Southern Exposure conference in Spring 2026.

“This is more than a leadership course—this is a launchpad for a new generation,” said NGLA Co-Chair Raina Nelson. “These individuals are not only talented and driven; they’re committed to shaping a stronger, more connected, and more resilient produce industry.”

Nolan Family Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship was established to memorialize Jim Nolan, who took an ethical stand on a business matter at great cost to himself. As a result of his professional ethics, Nolan was ostracized by colleagues and remained isolated in his efforts to maintain moral integrity in his workplace. It would have taken only a few others with the courage to speak out to change the course of events. Tragically, Jim died before the trial that finally vindicated his actions by a judge and a jury of 13 who found in his favor. Our sincere thanks to Theresa Nolan for providing this scholarship to the members of the Southeast Produce Council. She is a lifetime member of the SEPC and is always available to lend a helping hand wherever needed.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

One college-aged student (graduating high school senior or current college student) will receive a one-time scholarship of $5,000 to their enrolling college/university. The scholarship will be awarded based on GPA (3.0 or higher), references, and quality of essay.

Thank you to all applicants - The recipient will be announced July 28th!

This malodorous fruit is the smelliest in the world and grows in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Apparently, it smells of rotten eggs, sweaty socks or even garbage. Doesn’t sound particularly appealing, does it? Think we’ll stick to strawberries (even if they aren’t berries!)
