Microsoft's 50th Anniversary: Change needs makers

Integrated campaign

It's Microsoft’s 50th Anniversary! A moment to honor the past, celebrate the future, and spotlight the spirit of continuous innovation that’s always moved us forward. From a PC on every desk to an AI companion, Microsoft has changed how the world works. For our 50th, rather than focus on Microsoft, we flipped the script to feature the people behind the tech and spark iconic memories made with Microsoft over the last 50 years.

Worlds need builders

Our design concept is rooted in immersive "worlds of Microsoft" filled with everyday artifacts that reflect personal milestones and memories that people have made with us. From Clippy to Minecraft, our graphics evoke product nostalgia for millions of users. The worlds of Microsoft invite stories we can all see ourselves in—centering unique yet universal experiences. And at the heart of the campaign is the slogan: “Change needs makers." Because the future isn’t just shaped by tech but by the people who use it.

Legacy graphics evoke nostalgia and prompt personal stories

Stories need tellers

By focusing on personal stories, we rekindled memories people already had with Microsoft—reminding them we’ve been by their side for five decades and will be their trusted partner in the era of AI.

Employees shared their moments of impact to celebrate 50 years of incredible doing. And we turned the lens on the makers themselves—celebrating all they've created with Microsoft, inspiring the next generation of innovators to build what’s next.

From memory to momentum

The campaign came to life through activations across both digital and physical environments that deeply connect people to our products and culture. Wherever they chose to engage, we were right there alongside them—bringing their most iconic Microsoft memories to life in new ways.

Blissed out in Crocs

People rocked their Crocs in our nostalgic "Bliss" Windows theme. Leaked on social pre-launch, the buzz was big—like 50.8K likes big. Comfort meets performance.

Making a Minecraft debut

Brand placements are nice, but nothing beats in-game experiences. Our 50th expression made a cameo in Minecraft with character skins so people could adopt and live their favorite personas.

The return of Solitaire

What better way to celebrate our 50th than to bring back the thrill of Solitaire—complete with pixelated edges and the satisfying cascade effect. Users were thrilled to see a nostalgic skin on their favorite procrastination tool.

Games need changers

Gaming is innovation. And it's driven it at Microsoft for many years. So, we jumped at the chance to celebrate 50 years of Xbox in-product and promote it across social. Our most beloved activation featured a library of iconic Xbox characters together in a single frame—available for users to apply as a wallpaper on their console.

Buzz that's built in

50th activations got a lot of traction on Xbox. Between organic coverage, paid media, and UGC, there was excitement from the start. The big draw? Players came to witness generations of iconic Xbox characters gathered in a single view.

Social collaborations

Make your own memories

We empowered users to create their own iconic graphics to celebrate our 50th. Bringing assets into Microsoft Designer, users around the world could mix and match them to reflect on memories made with Microsoft.

Employees and fans brought the 50th anniversary to life by downloading ready-to-use graphics or creating their own expressions with our 50th Anniversary toolkit.

Taking over Edge

The Edge browser refresh page is a coveted property, and we wanted to create an experience just as coveted. Our customized 50th timeline experience is beating the benchmark for other Edge experiences— and the downloads are breaking records!

It's happening on Teams

We made it easy to celebrate with backgrounds available right in Teams—no more searching or downloads. We debuted new immersive lobby themes as part of the 50th expression. Fans can also access 50th emojis in-product by simply typing “50th” into their search bar.

Trends need setters

The 50th merch collection placed within the top 1% of launches historically, representing one of the highest‑performing sales moments in company store history. Explore our collection of merch—totes, hoodies, pins, and more!

The results

More than a campaign, "Change needs makers" was a living testament to human ingenuity. A reminder that Microsoft’s story is—always has been, always will be—a story about people and what they make possible.
