NPPS Newsletter October 2024

Principal's Message

I hope everyone enjoyed a restful break and is ready for the exciting and busy conclusion to the year. As we move into the final months of 2024, we have many important events lined up that will showcase the dedication and talents of our students. These occasions will also bring us together as a community to celebrate all that we’ve achieved throughout the year.

This term is also a time for reflection as we wrap up 2024, and plan for 2025. I encourage all students to focus on finishing the year strong, whether it’s by putting extra effort into their studies, participating in school activities, or working on their dance for the Night of Celebration.

Please take the time to read your newsletter and stay informed of everything that is happening at North Perth.

The Heart of the School Project Update

We are excited to share progress on the Heart of the School Project, which forms Stage One of our Grounds Master Plan. This project aims to transform our school’s central areas into vibrant, engaging spaces that reflect the needs and visions of our community.

North Perth Grounds Master Plan Final Draft

Currently, we are in the process of securing funding for the project, and we're grateful to the Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association for generously funding the Concept Design. This design will be proudly displayed during our Night of Celebration, offering everyone a chance to see the exciting future of our school grounds.

We extend a big thank you to all the parents, students, and staff who contributed their thoughts and ideas in developing the brief. Your input has been invaluable in shaping this vision. Special thanks to Lisa McGann, who has volunteered her time and expertise to create the Master Plan and design brief. Her dedication has been instrumental in bringing this project to life, along with the grounds committee – Daniel Smith, Nathan Calleja, Nadia Tamigi and Lisa Montgomery.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward in making this shared vision a reality.

School Development Day Update

During the recent School Development Day, staff participated in a range of discussions and workshops focused on improving behaviour support and future planning for the school. Key topics included:

  • Introduction to the Major and Minor Behaviours Flowchart and updated Behaviour Support Guidelines, including new Student Reflection Sheets and Term 4 Behaviour Expectations.
  • An overview of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model by Dr. Ross Greene, led by Libby Goodwin and Lucy Downing, exploring how CPS could be integrated at NPPS alongside restorative practices.
  • Conducting an Internal Review against the recommendations from the Public School Review in 2022, future planning for the 2026-28 Business Plan, and preparations for the 2025 Public School Review.
  • Administrative topics including Risk Management Plans, PAT Testing, reporting processes, 2025 class structure, and planning for the arrival of the new transportable classroom.

Key Student Activities this Term

  • Year 6 Camp returned from three days at Woodman Point. It was a great success.
  • World Teachers’ Day Luncheon, Friday 25 October. Thank you to Nicole and all the parents involved in recognising our hard working teachers.
  • Mount Hawthorn Area Big Band Concert Thursday 24 October.
  • Year 3-4 Tennis Carnival Tuesday 29 October.
  • Massed Choir Concert at HBF Stadium Monday 4 November.
  • French Day – Tuesday 12 November
  • Interschool Chess Competition at Mount Lawley PS Tuesday 26 November.

Night of Celebration - Save the Date: Wednesday 27 November

Our annual Night of Celebration is shaping up to be another memorable evening. Students have already begun their dance lessons with EduDance Studios, and I’m confident they’ll deliver a great performance. The event will run similarly to last year, with a focus on showcasing the talents of our students and celebrating the achievements of the school community.

Early Childhood Expo

The Early Childhood Expo is scheduled for Wednesday, 20 November at 9.00am. This is a great opportunity to welcome new families to North Perth Primary School and provide them with essential information. The expo helps new families feel connected and informed before the 2025 school year begins. We appreciate the support of all involved in making this event a success.

Staffing Update

The North Perth Staffing Pool is currently exhausted, which means that all fixed-term positions for 2025 have been filled from this pool. Any additional fixed-term positions that arise will be sourced from the centralised fixed-term teacher pool. Despite these challenges, we are pleased to report that we are once again on track to retain all full-time teaching staff for the 2025 school year. This consistency is crucial for maintaining the high-quality educational experience we provide our students.

Grounds

Several important updates have been made to the school grounds to enhance both the functionality and the learning environment for our students:

  • Hand dryers have been installed in student toilets, providing a more hygienic and environmentally friendly option.
  • A new LED screen and sound system have been installed in the undercover area, which will greatly improve our ability to host assemblies and other large events.
  • A Big Fan has also been installed in the undercover area, funded by OSH Club. This addition will help keep the space comfortable for students during warmer months.
  • The sensory room continues to take shape. The recent installation of new carpet is the first step in preparing this space for 2025. The room is designed to support students with sensory needs, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will have once fully operational.
  • We are awaiting a confirmed arrival date for the demountable classroom planned for 2025, but we will keep you updated as soon as we receive more information.

News from the Art Room

125th Anniversary Art Project

After months of hard work behind the scenes, our collaborative sculpture is installed. Hopefully you have spotted the sculpture in its new home facing Angove Street.

Jodie Davison and Sarah Hanlon installing during the holidays.

It consists of a wire drawing of the school, affixed to an old farm gate, with wire and aluminium leaves and birds surrounding it. There are also four 'totem' poles, with birds and faces affixed. The faces represent the people and community of our school, and the birds are metal versions of the species of birds that can be found around our school.

The entire project was conceived using student ideas and drawings and made by students the whole way through. Your child will be able to tell you which parts they made and may even recognise their contributions.

I'd like to thank the parents who came and helped with preparations of materials and with putting the sculpture together. It is always good to work with the school community on a project, and your assistance is much appreciated.

Thank you to all families for contributing towards the project. Your children benefited from many sessions of quality art learning with Jodie Davidson, our Artist in Residence, and all did an amazing job contributing to the finished product. I hope that it will stand at the entrance to our school for many years to come, and students can come back to visit it with fond memories of the making experience.

In the future, we are looking to raise funds to light the sculpture so that it can throw shadows on to the wall of the school, further emphasising it at night and adding to its beauty. Watch this space.

Woodman Point Camp 2024 – by Year 6 students

On Monday, 14th October 2024, the Year 6 students arrived at school excited for three days of fun, activities, and unlimited time with their friends. We departed at 9:15 a.m. after loading up the bus with all our luggage. Accompanying us on the bus were our teachers, Miss Kinariwala and Mr. Dombrowsky. Mrs. Dennis and Miss Stein met us there.

Once we arrived at Woodman Point Recreation Camp, we unpacked, set up our dorms, and had watermelon and icy poles for morning tea. We then got free time, during which we played soccer, sang songs, rested, and played games in our dorms. Afterward, the teachers told us we would be having our first dorm checks. We had to make sure our dorms were tidy and clean, and we also had to come up with a 30-second skit to perform. Each group came up with different concepts—some sang and danced, while others did a play. We even had a mime show and an advert.

Before heading off to our first activity, we had lunch. Throughout camp, we participated in several thrilling and challenging activities, including raft building, vertical challenges, flying fox, archery, search and rescue, and a coastal bike ride.

After two activities, we had dinner before getting ready for our final activity of the day—Escape from Quarantine. We had to find different objects that would help us escape from the quarantine station. While searching for these objects, we had to stay safe from the security guards by freezing when they saw us and staying close together with our groups. If we didn’t, we were sent back to camp, where the camp instructor (nicknamed Gru) would give us a fun punishment. The aim of this activity was to learn about the history of the campsite while having fun. Ms. Newman came down and joined us after school, and took part in this activity.

Finally, it was time to get ready for bed—showers, clean teeth, and lights out. We may have stayed up chatting for a little while, but we all eventually fell asleep.

Day two started (for some) with an intensive bootcamp run by Mr. D. After the rest of us were awake, we had a big breakfast—hash browns, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, toast, cereal, fruit, and juice. Then we went off to two activity sessions. After lunch, we went to the beach and played a game against each group. The game involved teamwork, where we had to work together to get a tennis ball out of a pipe that had holes in it. We used buckets, which also had holes, to get water into the pipe to help raise the ball to the top. Once the ball was out, we had to get it to the ocean. After this stressful but enjoyable game, we were able to get into the water and have a swim. Mr. Streeton came to camp on day two and joined in the activities, which made the day even more exciting!

We returned to the campsite, showered, and had some free time—some of us rested while others played soccer, sang songs, and spent time with our friends. After another dorm check, we played musical bobs and won lots of chocolate and lollies. After dinner, we played fun games like a balloon relay, flipping cups, and passing the tennis ball/apple in the dining hall. Then we got our pillows and sleeping bags and moved to the recreation room for movie night. We watched Shrek 1 while eating our movie snacks. After a long day of activities and games, we were all very tired and ready for bed.

Day three began with us packing all our belongings and getting them out of the dorms. After a delicious breakfast of pancakes, we moved our belongings to another room. We got ready for our second-to-last activity. After our final two activities, we had a packed lunch and sang songs to Mr. D. Sadly, it was time for us to depart the campsite and return to school. We had an amazing camp experience with all of our friends and will always remember the memories we made together. We got to bond with each other, build on our friendships, and even got to know our teachers better. #ITWASFUN

Food: During our time at camp, we were served a large selection of foods that accommodated all dietary requirements. You would never be hungry during mealtimes because you were allowed to go back for seconds if you were still hungry. All meals came with a cup of juice, either orange or apple. For breakfast, we were given the choice of cereals, fruit, toast, tomatoes, baked beans, eggs, hash browns, or bacon on the first day and pancakes on the second. For lunch, we were served burgers on the first day, pizza on the second, and wrapped rolls on the third, along with juice and various salads. Lastly, the two dinners we received were steak and sausages with salad and butter chicken with naan and rice. Overall, the food was delicious, filling, and varied.

Accommodation: The dorms we were assigned were clean and tidy. We stayed in large dorms with comfortable bunk beds. There was plenty of open space for activities and hooks for bags. The rooms had fans and windows for fresh air. The campsite had various spaces available to us, including a soccer pitch, basketball court, and an outdoor open grass area in front of our dorms. We ate our meals in a large dining hall and had snacks outside in the open space under a tree. We got to explore the campgrounds during our various activities.

Activities: The Woodman Point Recreation Camp offered several activities during our trip. The flying fox was a favourite for many of us—it was very fun but also challenging for those with a fear of heights. Other favourites were Escape from Quarantine and Search and Rescue. All the activities were well-planned and kept us active and energized.

NAPLAN Parent Information Session

Thank you to all the parents who attended our recent NAPLAN parent presentation. Your participation and engagement were appreciated, and we hope you found the session informative and helpful. For those who couldn't make it or would like to attend in the future, we will be holding another presentation in Term 1 next year, ahead of the 2024 NAPLAN assessments. We look forward to seeing you there.

Reminder: No Dogs on School Grounds

For the safety and comfort of all our students, staff, and families, we kindly remind everyone that dogs (with the exception of service animals) are not permitted on school grounds. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Are You Leaving Us?

If your child will be moving to a different primary school and will no longer be attending NPPS in 2025, please email Corrina Cook, at Corrina.Cook@education.wa.edu.au, advising which school they will be attending in 2025. This is important information that helps us plan classes for 2025.
