NPPS Newsletter January 2025

Principal's Message

Welcome to the 2025 school year. I hope you all had a wonderful break and are feeling refreshed for the year ahead. A special welcome to our new families – we are thrilled to have you join our North Perth community.

At North Perth Primary, we remain committed to providing a high-quality teaching and learning environment where every child is supported to thrive. Our dedicated staff have been working hard to ensure a positive and engaging start to the year.

On Monday, our team of Education Assistants visited Kyilla Primary School to participate in professional learning on Classroom Management Strategies while teaching staff remained at school and engaged in curriculum focused sessions lead by out Maths, Science and HASS leaders.

The whole staff come together today to begin exploring the updated English Curriculum and continue our learning on neurodiversity and regulation strategies. The Kindergarten to Year 2 learning team had their first session with Early Childhood specialist Dr Amie Fabry, focusing on connecting with our values and what is important in the early years.

Staff also had time to prepare in their classrooms, in anticipation of welcoming students back to school tomorrow.

To celebrate the start of the year, we invite all families to our Welcome Back BBQ this Friday. It’s a great opportunity to connect with other families, meet staff, and enjoy a relaxed evening together. See the details below, hope to see you there.

Wishing everyone a fantastic start to 2025.

Grounds Update

I am pleased to share some exciting news about our school grounds.

The installation of the new early childhood transportable classroom was completed over the summer break, and we are very pleased with the results and how seamlessly it connects to the early childhood playground.

I’m also pleased to announce that the eight classrooms adjacent to the hall have been freshly painted, ensuring a vibrant and welcoming learning environment for our students on their return. A sincere thank you to our wonderful P&C for their generous $15,000 contribution towards this project.

Additionally, if you look up, the chimneys above the hall have received some long overdue maintenance and repointing over the break.

Hot Start

We will be taking proactive measures due to the extreme hot weather forecast for the remainder of the week.

Tomorrow, I will meet with students to discuss the best approach to handling the heat. We will emphasise the importance of staying hydrated, reapplying sunscreen, wearing hats, and taking personal responsibility for seeking shaded areas during break times.

To ensure the wellbeing of our students, we will be implementing the following measures:

  • Closing the oval during Break 2 (and possibly Break 1) to minimise exposure to the sun.
  • Opening the air-conditioned library and hall for students to take refuge from the heat at both break times.

It would be greatly appreciated if students could apply sunscreen before coming to school.

A majority of our students already bring water bottles daily—a fantastic practice that contributes to their overall wellbeing, and even more important during the summer months.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in ensuring the safety and comfort of our students during this hot start to the school year.

Sensory Room Update

Our New Sensory Room is Opening

We are excited to announce the opening of our new Sensory Room, a dedicated space designed to support students with their self-regulation and sensory needs. This addition to our school has been made possible through the generous donations of our community—thank you. No further donations are required at this time, and we appreciate your support.

Today, parents Juliana Wilkes and Rosie Bates led an informative session with our staff, sharing valuable strategies to help students regulate in the classroom. Their insights will help how we support our students each day.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact this space will have on our students’ well-being and learning.

Expression of Interest: After-School Chess Club

We are looking for a parent or parents interested in volunteering to run an after-school Chess Club on-site once a week or fortnight.

Chess is a fantastic way for students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic skills in a fun and engaging environment. If you are keen to help foster a love of chess among our students, please contact the front office or email Andrew Streeton at andrew.streeton@education.wa.edu.au. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
