Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations

Congratulations to our Year 12 students on completing their Trial HSC exams. These assessments are an important milestone, giving students valuable experience in exam conditions and helping identify areas for final revision before the HSC. Thank you to our staff for their support and guidance throughout the process, and well done to Year 12 for their dedication and resilience.

Year 8 into Year 9 Subject Selection Night

Our Year 8 into Year 9 Subject Selection Night was a great success, with strong attendance from students and families. The evening was filled with lively discussions, helpful advice from staff, and plenty of excitement about future learning pathways. Thank you to our dedicated teachers for guiding students through this important step in their education.

There was also an opportunity to find out greater information about our Big Picture Academy for Year 9 - 12 students. It was a great success, with families learning how this unique program supports students to follow their passions, build real-world skills, and connect with mentors. Thank you to the students and staff who shared their experiences and made the evening so engaging.

School Upgrade Update

Our Gymnasium roof replacement is getting closer to completion and we hope it will be completed by the end of August. A reminder, while the gym is out of operation students who have practical classes are allowed to wear their sports uniform all day.

We are also getting new gates with greater security, to allow for improved access to the school.

The courtyard near the hall is planned for a revamp, which we hope to be ready for the Year 12 Graduation.

We are also still keenly awaiting the upgrade of our Art and TAS blocks to commence.

Year 11 Camp

Some words about camp from Lianne - Year 11 student

Camp is a memorable and well anticipated time for all of Year 11 and the teachers who attend. From the bus ride to the camp and then all the way back, it is three days filled with fear facing activities, memory making and connections being formed. On the 30th July we arrived at the great Aussie Bush Camp. After settling into our cabins we got straight into activities.

Although the weather was not completely on our side, it definitely didn't hold us back from scaling a 13m high power fan and then jumping off a platform with a harness. While the activities definitely were an exciting part of the camp, many said that their highlight was the games night where we all competed against each other and the teachers in groups - there is still much debate on who were the real winners but that might be left unsettled for quite a while.

Break times were spent singing karaoke and Just Dance. These simple activities were just another one of those highlights that made so many memories and inside jokes that will be a core part of our last camp experience. It was so fun waking up to Dancing Queen at 6 am and then filling the days fun and excitement . Thank you to the teachers who attended as well as the camp instructors - the fire show was amazing. You gave us a final camp experience that was more than just activities. It was a celebration of everything we have shared and everything we have become.

Literacy Matters!

Literacy is the foundation of all learning. Strong reading skills not only improve academic performance but also open doors to new ideas and opportunities. This semester, we have continued our focus on reading with Year 8 in Literacy lessons, using Scholastic Literacy Pro. This program helps students select books at the right level, track their progress and set personal reading goals.

The program determines a Lexile reading level, a measure that matches a reader’s ability with the difficulty of a text. Literacy Pro then suggests books within a student’s Lexile range, so they are challenged but not overwhelmed. As students read more and take quizzes in Literacy Pro, their Lexile scores improve, showing measurable progress over time. This personalised approach means students are more likely to find books they enjoy, while steadily building comprehension, inferential reading, vocabulary, and overall confidence.

This year, each class is competing for the title of Top Reading Class of the Year. Every book and quiz completed could be the one that tips the balance! Here is the total number of words read by each class, so far:

  • 8 Blue - 4 390 447
  • 8 Green - 3 990 861
  • 8 Indigo - 14 629 096
  • 8 Red - 5 463 914
  • 8 Violet - 24 069 620
  • 8 Yellow - 20 913 655

Alongside our reading goals, this semester we will be developing sentence-level understanding and using the Seldon Method to build strong paragraph writing. This means students will not only read for comprehension but also practise crafting clear, well-structured sentences and linking them into cohesive paragraphs to support all areas of their learning.

Helpful tips to improve literacy skills:

  1. Read widely and regularly - a variety of reading material builds vocabulary, critical thinking, and background knowledge.
  2. Discuss what you’re reading - linking reading to real-world issues deepens understanding.
  3. Expand vocabulary in context - keep a running list of new words from reading or classwork and practise using them in sentences.
  4. Write beyond assessment tasks -journals, opinion pieces or creative writing strengthen sentence fluency, critical thinking and paragraph structure.
  5. Link reading to goals and interests - whether it’s future career aspirations, hobbies, or passions, connect texts to what matters most to your child. Motivation increases effort.

HPGE Enrichment News

2025 has been an inspiring and dynamic year for our High Potential and Gifted Education students so far. We began the year with our regular term reviews and frequent classroom visits, aiming to reinforce the Enrichment Stream ethos where excellence is achieved through curiosity, maturity, creativity and a drive to lead.

In May and June, our Year 9 and 10 Student Ambassadors embraced leadership roles through the South Sydney Enrichment Program, assisting in delivering workshops and mentoring local primary school students. These sessions not only strengthened their confidence and communication skills but also forged meaningful connections across our broader learning community.

Opportunities for innovation and exploration have continued to flourish. The SSCIM Club meets every Friday, serving as a lively hub for critical thinking and strategic games. Year 9 students have ventured beyond the English curriculum with a cross-curricular focus, baking historical desserts, engaging in staged duels, and examining the traditions of courtly love. Four students have expressed interest in Elizabethan fashion and are working creatively in the library every week in preparation for their ‘Runway Passion Project'. Stay tuned for their final product! Meanwhile, our Year 7 students are already deep into sponsorship efforts for Writing a Book in a Day, an exciting 12-hour creative challenge taking place this September.

Our academic competitions are also in full swing. The ICAS Digital Technologies, Writing and English Assessments are now complete, with Science, Mathematics and The Spelling Bee scheduled in the coming weeks.

The momentum shows no signs of slowing. In Term 4, Year 7 and 8 students will embark on an ambitious satellite engineering STEM project, applying classroom learning to real-world scientific challenges. November will bring both the Stage 4 and Stage 5 SSCIM Camps, and preparations will begin for the revival of our student-led podcasts set to launch in Term 1 next year, offering students a dynamic platform to share their voices and ideas with the school community.

Our HPGE program is more than a collection of activities. It is a culture of high expectations, bold opportunities and the belief that every student can achieve something remarkable. This year, our students are proving just that: raising the bar and then pushing it even higher.

Year 7 South Sydney High School HPGE students set to tackle Writing a Book in a Day!

Eighteen of our Year 7 Yellow HPGE students will take on the Writing a Book in a Day Challenge on Wednesday, 17th September, a national event where teams have just 12 hours to plan, write, and illustrate an original book. Their finished stories will be donated to children in hospitals across Australia, bringing joy and comfort during difficult times.

This event raises vital funds for The Kids Cancer Project - a charity dedicated to funding life-saving childhood cancer research. Our students are already working hard to secure sponsorship, and we warmly invite our school community to support them.

To earn a spot in the challenge, each team must raise at least $240. Our Year 7 HPGE teams (Superstars and All-Stars) have already begun seeking sponsorship for their efforts, and we warmly invite our school community to get behind them. Donations can be made securely via the following links:

Every contribution, big or small, brings us closer to making a meaningful difference!

Prizes are awarded for fundraising, outstanding creativity, illustration and storytelling, but the greatest reward is knowing their efforts will make a real difference.

We are incredibly proud of our students’ creativity and teamwork. Let’s get behind them and help them make a difference!

Interview Skills for Year 10

On 13th August, we had the privilege of hosting a number of professionals from Macquarie Telecom. They came to each Year 10 English class to discuss and impart their wisdom about Interview Skills. This was met with enthusiasm and appreciation from our Year 10 students. This program morning, leads into the Mock Interview Program Day which will happen on the 11th November. We pride ourselves in helping to prepare our students for the world of work that awaits. We would like to thank United Way for their continued support for our school.

National Science Week 2025

The school theme for National Science Week in 2025 is Decoding the Universe - Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language.

Students took part in scavenger hunts during class time, tested their ingenuity in a lunchtime Problem-Solving Design Challenge, and joined in the excitement of our Pub-Style Science Trivia Quiz — with both students and teachers competing for bragging rights.

As part of the celebrations, our Year 7Y and Year 8Y classes headed into the city for the Science Festival at the Australian Museum and Royal Botanic Gardens, exploring hands-on exhibits and discovering the wonders of science in action.

We love Science!

VALID Science 10 assessment

During Term 3 students in Year 10 will participate in the VALID Science assessment.

The VALID assessment is a NSW Department of Education online assessment available to schools to assess and monitor student learning in science.

This is a diagnostic test, with tasks framed on Stage 5 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years 7–10 Syllabus (2018). Students will be tested on their:

  • Knowledge and understanding of science
  • Understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation
  • Ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically
  • Ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in science and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with a disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment that they would normally receive in the classroom.

The VALID test will also be used as a formal school assessment that will count towards their final report.

The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 10 students during Weeks 7 – Monday 1st September during periods 3 and 4.

A personalised electronic report describing the knowledge and skills demonstrated by your child in the test will later be available from the school.

Optional advice:

Students will be asked to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a computer to enable them to hear audio during the assessment. Earbuds used for mobile phones or other portable devices may be suitable for use during the assessment. The type of computer connection needed is a 3.5mm jack.

Where required, the assessment platform provides an on-screen standard calculator which can be used for calculations.

Music News

NSW Junior State Music Camp

My name is Ellie M, and I am currently in Year 8. This year, I had the privilege of attending the NSW Junior State Music Camp for the second time — an experience I will always cherish. During camp, I participated in Ensemble 2, performing as part of a musical theatre group and Ensemble 1 in the band Kats-Chernin. This opportunity was both exciting and challenging, enabling me to enhance my expression and stage presence.

A particularly memorable moment was the Ensemble 2 performance. After several days of rehearsals, it was incredibly rewarding to bring our collective efforts to life in front of the students at camp. The camp also featured a lively disco, during which the Stage Band performed live. The atmosphere was vibrant and provided a wonderful way to connect with new friends.

Reconnecting with friends from the previous year and meeting new people was another highlight of the camp. The unique environment fostered by the camp encourages camaraderie, and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to share this experience with both familiar and new friends.

One of the camp’s traditions is a game called Priest of Perish, which is a chaotic yet enjoyable game that brings everyone together for competitive entertainment in order to get privileges to line up first for meals. We also participated in another camp tradition - Trivia, which was a fun competition with both musical and general knowledge.

This year, the Year 8 students, including myself, were given the opportunity to participate in a Year 9 elective music workshop for the first time. We worked on Eliza Aria by Elena Kats-Chernin, a beautiful and complex piece that challenged us to elevate our musicianship. This intensive two day workshop significantly contributed to my growth as a musician.

During camp we also performed in the camp choir for our 3 camp item pieces. We performed works composed by Paul Jarman, who also served as our conductor. Although I primarily play the trumpet, singing in the choir offered a fresh perspective on music and allowed me to connect with the repertoire in a new and meaningful way. Paul Jarman’s passion and storytelling made this experience particularly memorable.

On the final evening, we had the opportunity to perform the pieces we had rehearsed for our parents. I was honoured to be selected to introduce my band to the audience along with another Year 8 student in my ensemble.

In summary, this year’s camp was filled with music, laughter, and unforgettable moments. I left feeling more confident in my abilities and enthusiastic about the future of my musical journey. I will eagerly anticipate next year’s camp where I’ll be going to senior music camp for the first time.

Until next year.....Ellie from Year 8

Draw the House - Sydney Opera House 31 August, 27 September, 26 October, 30 November

Create a range of drawings inspired by one of the world’s most iconic buildings. Once a month join like-minded creative souls to explore the Opera House and its surroundings through the eyes of an artist. Working with a different artist each month, explore various drawing techniques, and perspectives inspired by one of the world’s most iconic buildings. You will also learn from an expert Tour Guide about the influence of visual arts in the Opera House's history, including the beautiful tapestries that grace our venues and foyer spaces. Drawing is practical as an architectural and engineering blueprint, but it is also a tool for creative expression and making meaning, visually documenting what we see or imagine on paper, for others to view, interpret and enjoy.
