Science

Before the break, we discussed 3 things animals do during winter. They migrate, hibernate or adapt.

Migrate/hibernate/adapt activities

There was discussion of what animals with and without a backbone are called - vertebrate and invertebrate. A skeleton was presented so the children could visualize the backbone in our bodies.

sort/cut and paste

A fun activity was presented where the children use a magnifying glass to match very small snowflakes to large snowflakes.

Geography

We began a study of the continent of Antarctica. The children learned it is the coldest continent, an island (surrounded by the Southern Ocean) and also considered a desert. They were surprised to know that people don't live there. Scientists go there to research. We also examined animals indigenous to Antarctica, i.e., elephant and crabeater seals, orca whales, emperor and chinstrap penguins. We did a closeup look at emperor penguins and their uniqueness being that the father takes care of the egg until it hatches while the mother is away hunting.

Nathan Kas took 3 Walks Around the Sun as he celebrated with the class. Happy 3rd Year of Life, Nathan.

Here's our poem for the month of January. January opens the box of the year and brings out things that are bright and clear. And brings out things that are cold and gray. And shouts "let's see what I brought today". January has certainly opened a box of weather surprises. Stay C O Z Y everyone!
