PRISON ME NO WAY

'Prison Me No Way' visited Parkside last week. The workshops provided real-life learning experiences for the children in Year 5 & 6 to help reduce risky behaviour and prevent them from becoming involved in crime. The aim is to prepare children for challenges of the modern-day in an interactive way that can be absorbed without fear whilst also ensuring their well-being and safety is protected. These workshops also help children prepare for the step up towards secondary education with increased confidence and accurate knowledge better able to understand, react appropriately and protect themselves during the transition period.

You can find out more about the scheme at https://www.pmnw.co.uk/

HEAD LICE REMINDER

Head lice and nits are very common in young children and their families. They do not have anything to do with dirty hair and are picked up by head-to-head contact. We would like to remind all parents and carers that it is a good idea to check your child's hair regularly to see whether there are any lice present. A consistent approach to detection is the best way to control head lice. The advised method is wet-combing. Please click the links below for a guide to wet-combing and our head lice policy.

The NHS also has guidance which you can see by tapping here, which includes the following recommended video:

MEASLES - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Since last October, parts of the Midlands, particularly in Birmingham (80%) and Coventry (10%), experienced a rise in cases, mainly in children aged under 10 years. With low vaccine uptake in some communities, there is a real risk of seeing the virus spread in other towns and cities and that’s why health protection and local NHS teams are asking for urgent action across England to increase MMR vaccination uptake in those areas at greatest risk.

The problem with measles is that is spreads very easily in those who are unvaccinated, through coughs or sneezes and being in the same room as someone who is infectious, particularly at school or nursery.

Measles, mumps and rubella are all highly infectious conditions which can easily spread between unvaccinated people.

Reassuringly, East Riding currently has a good uptake for the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine with latest figures at 95% and the highest uptake across the Yorkshire and Humber region. The MMR vaccine is a safe and effective way of protecting against these highly infectious conditions.

Health protection colleagues at East Riding and Hull have been working alongside local NHS teams and the Humber and North Yorkshire Health & Care Partnership on a campaign to raise awareness and encourage those living and working in the region to check their family has had both doses of the MMR vaccine, as well as anyone they care for.

The MMR vaccine is particularly important if you are planning to get pregnant, have a weakened immune system or long-term health condition.

If there were to be an outbreak in the region, the more people that can be vaccinated the better to prevent it spreading further across a community and the wider population.

What should we all know?

  • The MMR vaccine is normally given at the age of one and again at age three and four months, before starting school, through your GP
  • Two doses give lifelong protection from measles, mumps or rubella and it’s never too late to catch up if you didn't have it, or only had one dose
  • These conditions can result in hospitalisation and cause serious problems such as meningitis, hearing loss and problems during pregnancy
  • Children who get measles can be very poorly and some will have life-changing complications
  • After two doses around 99% of people will be protected against measles and rubella and around 88% of people will be protected against mumps.

How do I check if I or my family still needs the MMR vaccine?

  • Parents and carers, especially those with young children or young adults at university or travelling are advised to check their child’s red book for vaccination records
  • Adults can contact their GP or on the NHS App to check if they have had both doses of the MMR vaccine
  • Some people in their early to mid-twenties may not have been vaccinated as a child due to public misinformation at the time, but the vaccine is safe and effective, so please check with your GP
  • Make an appointment with your GP or practice nurse to catch up on your vaccinations.
