Cyclone Brew is the newest addition to Harlan Community High School’s tradition of excellence. As part of the school’s recent renovations, the idea for a student-run coffee shop came to life. It was created in collaboration with students enrolled in Entrepreneurship, a course focused on developing real-world business skills through hands-on experience.
As a student in the class, they learn to manage inventory, create recipes, organize promotional events, and provide customer service. They rotate through roles such as barista, manager, and marketer to experience multiple aspects of running a business. Cyclone Brew serves students and staff each morning and is also open during basketball games, special events, and youth activities throughout the year. It is the perfect place for parents and fans to enjoy a drink while supporting the Harlan Cyclones. Employees of Cyclone Brew generously volunteer their time, effort, and energy to provide quality service during the evenings, early mornings, and weekends.
Cyclone Brew works collaboratively with Cyclone Corner, the school’s online store for Cyclone gear and accessories, to design employee apparel. Students in the coffee shop work to draft a logo and determine the style and branding of the items. Additionally, students have designed a Cyclone Brew mug, available for purchase by customers. Those who purchase a mug will have the opportunity to join “Mug Club,” a promotional event which offers exclusive member perks, including insider discounts. Cyclone Brew is proud to serve students, staff, and community members with fun, exciting events that offer meaningful, real-world learning experiences for its employees. Cyclone Brew has also partnered with event fundraising at various events. In February, Cyclone Brew raised $1,350 to be donated to a local scholarship fund in connection with the school’s “Blue Out” game. Students have been involved in planning, marketing, and promoting sales at all the events that Cyclone Brew partners with.
Cyclone Brew has created a positive, hands-on learning environment that allows students to experience the behind-the-scenes operations of running a successful business. Students apply classroom knowledge in a physical setting while developing leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. With the help of students, teachers, and administrators, Cyclone Brew is looking forward to serving the community for many years to come.
