Thanksgiving recipe for turkey

compiled by Evelyn Self

Lots of people in America celebrate Thanksgiving so if you are looking for a new recipe to use for your turkey/chicken then you might want to read this article.

Click HERE for the recipe from the Tastes Better from Scratch website.

Turkey

  • One 12 to 20-pound turkey/chicken.
  • One onion peeled and quartered.
  • One lemon quartered.
  • One apple (whatever kind) quartered.
  • .75 ounce container of fresh rosemary.
  • .75 ounce container of fresh thyme.
  • .75 ounce container of fresh sage.

Herb butter

  • One cup of unsalted butter (softened).
  • One teaspoon of salt.
  • One-half teaspoon of ground black pepper.
  • 6 to 8 cloves of minced garlic.
  • Fresh chopped herbs.

Instructions

If the turkey/chicken is frozen, thaw in the fridge for 24 hours per five pounds.

Remove turkey/chicken from the fridge one hour before roasting.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees f.

Use the extra herbs from the butter as stuffing for the turkey.

Remove the turkey or chicken from the package and remove the neck and giblets inside the cavities. Dab it dry with paper towels

Season the inside cavities with quartered onion, lemon, and apple (leftover herbs as well).

Loosen the skin around the breast and smooth out a few tablespoons of herb butter underneath the turkey or chicken.

Tuck the wings underneath the turkey's body and set it in a roasting pan before roasting.

Microwave herb butter for 30 seconds to soften and use it to brush all over the turkey.

Roast at 325 degrees f. For 13 to 15 min per pound.

Remove the turkey/chicken from the oven after it reaches 160 degrees and tent it in foil. Then, let it rest on the counter. The foil will let the turkey cook a little bit extra.

After a while, check on the turkey/chicken to see if it is golden brown.

Allow turkey to rest for 20 to 30 min before carving and serving.

A Simple and Easy Guide to Decluttering

Gaia Somaini

Our house used to be (and kind of still is) full of items that we don’t use or need. My mom is claustrophobic, so at some point, she told us, “Soon enough, we will have to move out, and stuff will live in this house instead of us.” And with that, we began to declutter.

According to the online Merriam-Webster dictionary, “declutter” means “to remove clutter from a room, area, etc.” The dictionary’s definition of “clutter” is “a crowded or confused mass or collection.”

Do you want a mass of stuff on your bedroom floor or a kitchen counter so full of random things that you can’t even slice a tomato? I can imagine that many people don’t.

Clutter can have a detrimental impact on your mental health.

According to mithoc.org, “The studied downsides of living in a disorganized or cluttered environment include memory impediment, poor eating habits, an increased chance of developing mood disorders, and decreased impulse control.”

Decluttering can help your productivity.

“Nearly every mental health downside that comes from disorganization and clutter can be improved by getting organized. ‘You'll feel less exhaustion, enhance your productivity at the office, and greatly improve the quality of your life if you can learn how to declutter and become organized,’” Psychology professor Joseph Ferrari said in an article at mithoc.org.

As I decluttered my desk, I realized it wasn’t that hard to get rid of stuff I didn’t use. I created a list of small steps to easily declutter any space.

Graphic and Photos by Gaia Somaini

4 Steps to a Decluttered Space

Step 1- Get rid of trash (wrappings, paper, boxes, etc.)

Step 2- Get rid of things that you don’t use or need

Step 3- Clean the surface

Step 4- Re-arrange (if needed) with only the items that you need

Trust me, you’ll feel much better after decluttering because you will have lots more space.

Have fun!

Grab a separate bowl about medium sized and add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. (you can add coconut oil to make it smoother if you would like)

Photos by Brooklyn Velasquez

Put the bowl with everything in it in the microwave for 30 sec intervals till completely melted and make sure you are stirring between the intervals.(leave the bowl with the cereal to the side)

Photos by Brooklyn Velasquez

Once everything is melted pour it over the cereal and mix till everything is coated thoroughly. (this will take a couple of minutes)

S’mores Cookies

Harper Bononcini

These cookies are great for the cold season that is coming up. It's also great when it's too cold to roast the marshmallow on a fire outside.

They are a great mix of the nice gooey chocolate chip cookies and the S’mores with the marshmallow, chocolate bar, and graham crackers. They are so good and I hope you enjoy them!

Ingredients:

  • Graham Crackers
  • Chocolate bar * I prefer hershey chocolate bar
  • Marshmallows * Make sure they are the big size
  • Cookie dough

Directions:

Place graham crackers, chocolate, and big marshmallows on parchment paper.

Lightly press cookie dough on top.

Bake at 350 for about 10-13 minutes (I would check them after 2-3 minutes because sometimes the marshmallow/cookie dough will fall over and you have to scoop it back on the graham cracker.)

After they are done baking, let them cool for about 5 minutes and enjoy!

Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

Emily Malella

Over the fall season, and mostly Christmas break, my mom and I love to bake cookies. We specifically bake a recipe that wasn’t necessarily made by her, but with a few tip and tricks that make them even better. The recipe was originally from a Crisco recipe, but the few modifications that are added are sure to make these cookies some of the most delicious chocolate chips cookies you’ve ever had.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cups Crisco butter flavor all-vegetable shortening
  • 1 ¼ cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk ( I recommend whole milk it will make the cookies taste richer )
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips ( optional )

Instructions:

First, preheat the oven to 375° fahrenheit

Beat shortening, brown sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a large bowl with mixer on low until well blended

When blended, crack one egg in a separate dish to insure there aren’t any shells that could ruin the mixture. Once cracked, pour into the original mix

Stir flour, salt and baking soda in a medium bowl. Gradually beat into creamed mixture until just blended

When both mixtures are fully combined, pour in the chocolate and white chocolate chips ( if using them ) into the bowl

(One of the tricks that make our cookies differ from the recipe is that we put the cookies in over night to cool. If you are making them in the morning or midday, be sure to refrigerate them for at least four hours before taking them out for best results. )

Come back the next morning, ( or as early as four hours, ) and hand scoop out small balls of dough, and place three inches apart on a baking sheet.

( For the baking sheet we use tin foil, which I will explain during the cooling process. Be cautious if you have a convection oven, because it’s best to not use tin foil. Instead you can use a non- stick pan or other alternatives. )

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes for a soft, chewy cookie, or 11 to 13 minutes for a crispy cookie.

For cooling process, my mom usually takes each pan, and hovers it to about 4 inches off the counter, and drops it a couple times repetitively for a nice bumpy texture

Cool for 2 minutes, then when totally positive it won’t burn your tongue, eat and enjoy!

Dear Rocky,

This was my first year in middle school sports. It's been so much fun, and I'm loving the energy of it! But I know a few of our teammates take a loss or a mistake badly, and I try to be nice to them when they freak out on everyone and ask them to shake it off, but it's becoming repetitive! How do I bring it up with them in a way that won't bring our whole team down?

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

This can be frustrating! It can be difficult to know how to handle other people’s negative attitudes! Especially on a sports team when everyone needs to do their part to contribute to the entire team, one person’s negative energy may rub off on the whole team. Kindly suggest telling them to let it go, and gently tell them to stay in the moment and make the next play. It is important to remain positive when suggesting this to the other person or else they may take it the wrong way and think you are mad at them for the mistake. Sometimes all they need is a little reminder that they are okay. However, if this doesn't work and they still are upset, work to ignore them. Make sure they do not bring down the energy of the entire team through their struggles, and always having a positive attitude can help the rest of your teammates do the same. Hi Rocky!

I keep getting homework, and I don't know what I can do to have a free afternoon. I use my time in class wisely, and I try my best, but I still have homework at the end of the day. Can you help?

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

This can be confusing! First, I recommend starting by figuring out how much time you actually have to spend on the assignments. Whether it is in extra class time, at home, in the morning, or before bed, use every minute you have to get those things done. Time management is key. Making sure that you do not procrastinate on your tasks will help you feel a lot less stressed about your workload. Make sure there are no distractions. Organizing your time chunk into different sections with the different tasks you have to do is important. Start with writing down all the assignments you have to do in the order you need to complete them and finish, especially starting with the shorter assignments first that you can complete quickly. You can even break down bigger projects into more manageable sections. Be sure to give yourself a short break in between, but be sure to get right back on task. Give yourself a reward when you finish! Knowing when and how to manage the limited time you have can be very helpful in getting all things done.

Dear Rocky,

I went to Lincoln elementary school and I made some good friends there. Then, after Covid-19 zoning, I switched to Valley View. when I came to Valley View, I made a really good friend. a few months later, I saw my friend from Lincoln in public. A few months later, I e-mailed him saying hello. Then, during 5th grade I had an argument with him. We kinda broke up after that, and when middle school started, I would say hi to him in the halls or something, but he would just ignore me. Also, my Valley View friend is only in two of my classes. I have a friend who is in most of my classes with me, and I sit with him during lunch. He is nice, and went to Lincoln with me. It is beginning to get hard to decide which one of them I should hang out with most.

-Confused

Dear Confused,

This sounds like a tough situation! Figuring out your social relationships with people is one of the most difficult parts of middle school. I can relate to the feeling of having lots of people to hang out with, and not being able to decide between who to hang out with the most. Stay on good terms with your friends, whether by greeting them in the hall or interacting kindly with them at all times. The more people who are readily available to you and are willing to support you in times of need, the better off you will be to have lots of people to turn to. I think whoever makes you feel the best to be around is who you should spend most of your time with. Trust your gut!

Rocky,

My boyfriend is cheating on me with my sister, but I don't know how to confront him. What do I do?

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

Oh no! That is tough. Tell him how this made you feel and explain why you are hurt. Disconnect your relationship with him. He did not respect you or your relationship with your sister enough to express his feelings. So it is fair to move on from this. Talk to your sister about this, as she likely did not intend to do any harm. Kindly tell her how this made you feel.

Rocky,

I like a 6th grader and he says he likes me back but he's always switching up if he likes me or not. What should I do Rocky?

-Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

It sounds like this person is confused and doesn’t know or connect with his emotions/feelings. If they are not showing constant affection for you and don’t know for sure their feelings for you, you don’t deserve them. You can still maintain a friendship with them, and maybe as they age they may sort out their feelings for you. Until then make sure to separate your feelings for him with your current relationship.

“Better Than The Movies” by Lynn Painter

“Better Than The Movies” is a YA romance novel and is very rom-com coated. If you’re looking for a fun cutsy little romance, I recommend Lynn Painter to do the job for you.

The FMC (female main character) is a girl named Liz, she’s a hopeless romantic—like most of us—And loves rom-coms, hence “rom-com coated.” Liz believes she is destined to find her “like the movies” type of love, and believes that Micheal, her childhood crush will be that, until…that might not work out.

Wes Bennet, the guy Liz trys to work with to get Micheal, comes into the picture after that.

WWII

1941-1942

Trenton Kelly

Intro

After the victory in France, Germany sought its true goal, the Soviet Union. Germany's main goal in this war from the start was to expand east into the Soviet Union. So they planned to do just that. On June 22nd, 1941 Germany broke the non-aggression pact between the 2 nations and declared war.

Operation Barbarossa

Operation Barbarossa was the initial invasion of the Soviet Union. When the Germans first invaded the USSR, they had over 3,000,000 (according to Britannica) men on the frontline. Germany and the USSR had a non-aggression pact at the time, so the USSR’s leader, Joseph Stalin, was not expecting an invasion from the Germans. When the invasion first started, the front was severely unguarded. The first invasion was an offensive by the Germans named Operation Barbarossa. It was a plan to invade the USSR to capture their capital of Moscow and the resource-rich Ukraine area. So they pushed into the USSR almost instantly capturing eastern Poland and moving into Belarus. The Germans were famous for their war style called Blitzkrieg (lightning war) in which they would send forward their motorized, tanks, and trucks before their infantry, it also consisted of encirclements of the enemy. So when the Germans invaded the Belarus region they encircled the city of Minsk capturing/killing 340 k+ Soviets (according to Britannica) in the city.In less than a month the Germans had already conquered Belarus. After the success in the north, they headed south to Crimea, cutting off the peninsula, and capturing the 100,000+ men trapped there (According to Britannica). They then pushed into Ukraine, encircling the major city of Kiev and capturing close to a million Soviets. The Soviets were still scrambling to reorganize their army to face the attacking Germans while moving their industry east to avoid air raids. After supporting their frontlines Germany went for one final blow to the Russian capital of Moscow. The Germans pushed through the center of the Soviet lines and they got 17 kilometers from the capital. (10.56 miles)

Operation Edelweiß (Mountain Flower)

After the Germans were stopped outside of Moscow, the Soviets reorganized their army and were ready to start a counter-offensive. (according to History.com) The Soviets pushed all winter and made good progress pushing the Germans back in the north and center but the Germans held strong in the south. After the Soviet offensive came to a halt the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin thought another attack on Moscow was coming and left the southern front widely unguarded, at the same time Hitler was planning an attack on the southern front to try and seize the caucasus oil fields. So when the Soviets moved their men north to guard Moscow Germany plowed south toward the city of Stalingrad and the caucasus oil fields. With the little Soviet troops, they pushed down toward the Caucus Mountains and Stalingrad. They encircled the city but the troops inside had orders not to let the Germans take the city, and the Soviets did just that. The troops trapped inside held out until their new t-60 tanks could start a counter-offensive on the city and encircle the Germans in the city, 700k Germans were killed in the battle. (according to Britannica)

Counter Attack

After the failure in Stalingrad, the Germans had to scramble to get their troops out of the Caucasus Mountains before they were encircled. While the Germans were panicked the Soviets took this opportunity to counter-offensive against the Germans to try and regain lost land. With the start of the counter-offensive and their army now fully organized in just 2 months, they had pushed the Germans clear back to Ukraine and were almost to Kiev, in the north, they had practically reached Leningrad which had been under siege by the Germans since the initial attack in 1941. When the Germans tried to prepare a defensive line they failed every time because of the harsh winter conditions and it looked like the Germans would continue getting pushed back. At the end of 1942, the Germans finally started to slow down the Soviets and set up a defensive line.

Black Holes

Part 2

Bridger Thompson

You slowly wake up, unaware of your surroundings, falling through endless emptiness. As you see a rocky object appear out of nowhere and disintegrate right before you, you realize that you feel sick to your stomach, and everything becomes a blur again.

This is about how it would feel and look after you fall in and out of a black hole (see part 1 in the October issue if you're confused). The only reason you could see anything was that you were a human although we gave you a spacesuit that made you invincible to gravity when you fell out of the hole into the antiverce there was antigravity (gravity pushed instead of pulled, that's why it´s called an antiverce), and since the composition of your body was less dense it took longer to tear you apart.

What happened you ask? Well it all started with the suit we gave you, you could survive going into a black hole because the gravity pushed in, not out, that was all the suit was designed for. No one knows what antigravity would be like, we just know it exists. How do we know it exists? We know it exists because of a famous scientist called Robert Penrose.

Robert Penrose, born in 1931, was one of the most distinguished scientists of his age (you probably haven't heard of him because his era overlapped with Albert Einstein's). One of his biggest accomplishments, and the one relevant to this subject, is his creation of the Penrose diagram (for more information on this subject, watch this Veritasium video).

The Penrose diagram is the current most developed diagram of the space-time layout of a black hole. The main idea of the diagram is that if you somehow managed to get inside a black hole you would find yourself in another dimension. In this strange dimension, gravity pulls apart instead of pushing together and life (probably) wouldn't and couldn't exist. In real life when gravity reigns supreme you can't get into a black hole because of what you know as spaghettification (being turned into human spaghetti) but if you could, you could theoretically transfer universes in a relatively short amount of time. Just one problem: you can't go back out once you go in.

The Penrose diagram pushes space and time together to get an accurate but hard-to-understand diagram of how black holes work. The one thing that you can tell almost instantaneously after looking at it is that you can only go forward. Take a look at a full Penrose diagram, you should find that it has an arrow of time that arrow goes forward, never backward. So in the diagram, you are confined to always moving forward through time.

Graphic by Bridger Thompson

The only thing that can make you stay still is gravity, the gravity at the horizon is infinite but the horizon is infinitely thin. This makes a strange area on the horizon where the balance is perfect, in this area photons (light) get stuck on the edge and take days to break free. Using this information we can assume that a weird flux (unpredictable) of energy is on the horizon, this energy would add an area where instead of spaghettifing being the first stage, the first stage is when the energy shreds you like a cheese grater, making it impossible to cross.

The phenomena of a black hole are immeasurable, they have inspired physicists for centuries. We hope this series inspired you to take a deeper dive into this subject, because of their immense influence this is not a hard task. A journey into the world of the theoretical. I'm sure you'll find it intriguing.

The Megalodon

Adithya Rajendran

Imagine you are a Baleen Whale in the Miocene or Pliocene epochs. You're about to filter feed when suddenly, you feel something like a massive torpedo ram into your underbelly at immense speeds, breaking multiple of your bones and biting into you with great force! You might be questioning now “What is this thing?!” Well, it's a massive prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon that lived 2.6 million years ago. And in this article, you will learn about the Megalodon, its hunting strategies, how it went extinct, and more!

The mass/size of the Megalodon

Estimates said it was a massive 46-65 ft (14 meters-20 meters) in length, while estimates for the width of its jaw were 2.7-3.4 meters. It weighed over 70 tons at its fully grown state, and could crush a car with its jaws! How did they get these estimates you ask? Well, it was difficult to find the exact size of the Megalodon because shark bones are cartilage and cartilage rapidly decomposes over time. So how did they make estimates about its size you ask? Well, while their bones decomposed, their massive 7-inch-long teeth did not, allowing scientists to estimate its size and jaw size by using a few different calculations, based on Great White Shark tooth size and then comparing it to Megalodon teeth since the Great White Shark was its only living Ancestor.

Fun fact: The Megalodon had a bite force of over 40,000 PSI, meaning it has the strongest bite force out of any animal that has ever existed. You could say it was “The King of Bite Force."
livescience.com

The Megalodon’s prey and methods of hunting

Because of the Megalodon’s massive size, it had to eat large prey such as large fish, whales, and other sharks. It would kill its prey by rushing at it with great speeds and chomping it with great force. It hunted whales similarly by going deep below the whale and rapidly swimming upward towards it like a torpedo, ramming into its underbelly. This would break many of its bones, making it unable to escape. Then the Megalodon would chomp into it again and again until it had finished its meal.

The Megalodon’s biggest enemies

You may think a shark this size would have no enemies and be unmatched. However, the Megalodon had many predators or enemies. Like the Great Hammerhead (Sphyrna Mokarran), which was mainly a threat to juvenile Megalodons and not adult megalodons. Or the Rhamphosuchus, one of the largest known crocodiles to roam the earth. It was estimated to have been 26-36 ft in length. “Given that the Rhamposuchus had such a long and strong bite, it would have been a big challenger to Megalodon” This Quote from the video “Top 6 biggest Megalodon enemies to ever exist”, link to it in the sources. However, the Megalodon’s biggest enemy was the Livyatan Melvillei. A giant predatory whale that could grow up to 45-60 ft in length. It killed its prey by ramming into it and biting into it at great speeds, not letting go. They both hunted for the same prey and turf, and their similar size and weight made Livyatans and Megalodons perfect competitors.

How the Megalodon went extinct

The many reasons for the extinction of the Megalodon were the changing climate and the dropping of global temperatures, reducing the area where a warm water shark like the Megalodon could thrive. This climate change would also kill off all of the creatures the Megalodon hunted. Not only that, other competitors for food that lived in the same eras as the Megalodon (The Miocene and Pliocene eras), made it exceptionally difficult to find food and survive since these enormous sharks required 2,500 pounds of food per day because of their massive size.

Is it possible that the Megalodon could still be alive?

While on YouTube or another video-sharing website, you may or may not have stumbled across some videos about “Real Megalodon sightings that prove it's alive” or something like that. However, it’s usually always fake. But is it possible that the Megalodon could still be alive today? Well… most likely no. If there were still Megalodons roaming the ocean, we would know about them because of their immense size and if we were to find giant shark bites in whales or other large sea creatures. You might be asking if it would be able to live in the Mariana Trench(The deepest oceanic trench in the world), but since the creatures in the Mariana Trench are mostly microscopic, and with the Megalodon needing 2,500 pounds of food daily, a Megalodon thriving in the Mariana Trench is almost impossible. But we have only so far explored 5% of our oceans, so it could be possible that a Megalodon might be somewhere in our oceans today. Do you think that the Megalodon could still be alive in our oceans today? Answer in the Google form below!

National Donut Day

Quinn Fleming

Maybe you were celebrating national Donut Day on November 5! Maybe you didn’t celebrate, but you’ve seen this holiday online. Or maybe you just decided to read this article out of pure confusion.

Whatever the case, November 5 has been listed as the holiday called “Donut Day”. This article will probably sound ridiculous, but the history of Donut Day is really interesting. So take a few minutes to read about one of the most popular foods in America!

Though doughnuts were celebrated in 1938, the treats themselves have been around for quite a while. Doughnuts have been traced back to Dutch immigrants from the 17-18th centuries, when the Dutch brought them to New York.

The name “doughnut” wasn’t used until 1809 by Washington Irvings. Before his rendition, the ring-shaped cakes were called olykoek (oily cake) by the Dutch. Doughnuts, which are now sold in almost every store, weren’t widely known to America until 1934, when they were a featured food in Chicago’s World Fair. At the World Fair, the doughnuts were viewed as a symbol of America’s progress. Now we have seen them grow into a mass production of over 100 flavors world wide.

The holiday itself was invented in 1938 to raise money in Chicago for the Salvation Army. “Lassies”, or women who passed doughnuts out to soldiers during WW2, are really the biggest reason this holiday exists today!

If you’re a regular in the cafeteria, then you will know that every Friday the cafeteria gives out doughnuts. From maple bars to apple fritters, these delicious, frosted treats have become very popular in the USA and other various countries around the world. So, next year celebrate Donut Day if you haven’t already, and keep in mind the history of how the holiday came to be!
