Men’s Basketball Makes it Four Straight, Move to 7-1
The Mules bookended the holiday break with games at Salve Regina and Union, picking up three more victories to improve their record to 7-1.
In Newport, R.I. on Tuesday, Marcos Montiel finished with a career-high 22 points on top of six rebounds and six assists. Jack Lawson and Max Poulton added 17 points apiece, while Savion Stroud led the way with eight assists. He currently leads the Mules with 34 assists on the season.
Over the weekend, Colby traveled to Schenectady, N.Y. for the Sig Makofsky Invitational hosted by Union College. In game one against Plattsburgh State, Colby dominated from the jump to lead from start to finish. Poulton led the offense with 22 points while four others scored in the double digits; Sam Hinman (14), Savion Stroud (12), Lawson (12) and Nate Kwiecinski (10).
In game two against the hosts, the Mules once again got off to a hot start and went into the break up 54-30. Union tried to make a push in the second half cutting the deficit to within eight, but Colby regained momentum to cruise to a 93-71 victory and the tournament championship. Lawson tallied a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, his third of the season.
The 7-1 Mules will finish the year at WashU’s 40th Annual Lopata Classic this Friday and Saturday.
Men's Ice Hockey Enjoys 2-0-1 Week
Colby's Men's Ice Hockey team's schedule mimicked that of the Men's basketball team, enjoying a solo matchup on Tuesday (Suffolk) before playing UMass Boston and SNHU in the Colby-Bowdoin Faceoff Classic over the weekend.
Against Suffolk, Colby goals by Will Soloway and Bobby Farrell weren't enough to slip past the Rams. Suffolk knotted the game late in the second period, and after a scoreless third frame and OT period, the Mules and Rams took to the shootout. While it goes down as a tie on the schedule page, Suffolk converted on two of their three tries to take the shootout 2-1.
In Saturday's matchup against UMass Boston, Colby took the lead in the first on Alex Keskintepe's first collegiate goal. Despite two scores for the Beacons, Massimo Gentile, Nick Stapleton, and Tyler Crist scores paced the Mules out ahead. Adam Costly collected his first win on the season in net for the Mules with 26 saves.
Scoring was plentiful in Sunday's matchup with SNHU as Colby tallied three times in the first, twice in the second, and twice more in the third to cruise to a 7-1 victory. Six different Mules scored goals, with Bobby Landry's pair leading the way.
Colby is now 4-1-1 and will travel to USM Tuesday before closing out the semester hosting Tufts and Conn. College over the weekend.
Women's Ice Hockey Nets First Shutout of Season
In their lone game of the week, the Women's Ice Hockey team used two scores and ferocious defense to skate past the Huskies of USM 2-0.
Colby's first tally came with six minutes to go in the first period when Georgia Pettygrove found Molly Lefebvre for the score. The second goal came with three minutes to go in the second as Audrey Shirer connected for her first of the season, assisted by Maria Pierce.
Mandy Busky's seven saves were all that was needed to secure the shutout, as Colby dominated shots on goal 44-7, faceoffs 29-19, and only committed one penalty all game.
Colby is now 2-2-0 and will host UNE Tuesday before closing out the semester on the road at Wesleyan and Trinity for non-conference action next weekend.
Women’s Basketball Battles Close with UNE
In their lone game of the week, the Mules traveled to Biddeford on Tuesday to face the University of New England Nor'easters. The matchup was a tight one from start to finish, with the deciding score coming down to the wire.
Colby found themselves down by four after the first quarter, but strong second and third quarters put the Mules in striking distance down the stretch. With four minutes remaining, Ana Von Rumohr and Kate Olenik hit back to back threes to tie the game at 51 before Olenik hit another from behind the arc with 40 seconds to go for a three point lead. UNE answered 20 seconds later to knot it up once again. After a failed Colby attempt with ten seconds remaining, the Nor'Easters transitioned the court and hit a clutch jumper to steal a 58-56 win.
Olenik, playing the full 40 minutes, led the team with 24 points (season high) to go along with four steals in the contest. Amelia Hanscom contributed a double-double, securing 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Von Rumohr's 11 points made it three Mules in double-digits.
The 2-3 Mules will head to Bates on Tuesday before hosting Bowdoin on Saturday in their final game of the semester.
