A message from Miss Quarmby
Hello! We were chuffed to start the week by finding out that we were the Cash for Kids Champion, with our grand total being an amazing £10,115.50! What an achievement, and thank you all again for your incredible support. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been able to use this money for! We’re currently in the process of applying for two other grants: one to create a second wraparound space and one to develop our playgrounds. Fingers crossed—hopefully we’ll have more positive news to share with you later on in the year.
This week, Year 4 children have been on another trip (they’ve only just been to the theatre!)—this time to Nell Bank. The Reception team also hosted their phonics morning, and a big thank-you to everyone who came along to join in. We’re also very excited because Mr. Stout is picking up his new puppy this weekend. We’re hoping that in the near future, he might be able to make an appearance at school...watch this space! Year 2 have been enjoying Bike Ability, and Wednesday was an exciting night at Wraparound because it was hotdog night! It’s been another week filled with so many smiles, phenomenal learning, and wonderful experiences. Have a fab weekend!
Attendance
This week’s attendance winners are 1JL, finishing in first place with an impressive 99.43%! 🎉 In second place, we have 3RD with 98.39%, and close behind in third place are 3JC with 97.85%. A special shout-out to 2KD, 1LR, and RJS, who have also smashed our school target of 96.5%—well done! The whole school attendance this week stands at 95.77%. Let's aim for our school target next week!
Let's take a look AT WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON THIS WEEK
EYFS
This term, the children in Reception will continue using the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) Mastery in Number programme. This week, they have been exploring subitising and visualising amounts, with a special focus on our number of the week, 7. The children are becoming increasingly confident in representing amounts in various ways, and the mathematical talk between them is very impressive. Thanks to the programme, they are showing great confidence in discussing changes in amounts, different arrangements of numbers, and comparing amounts. Well done, Reception!
Key Stage 1
Another superb week for learning in Year 1! This week, we have enjoyed practical hands-on activities in the wider curriculum. In Science, we were excited to use our sense of touch to explore a range of hidden objects in socks! We used describing words such as hard, squishy and rough, then guessed what the object could be. In Geography, we played 'pin London on the map' and created a map of the capital city.
This week in Year 2, we’ve had an exciting time learning how to ride bikes confidently and safely. In English, we’ve been mastering apostrophes for contractions and possession. We’ve also been busy preparing for a Kenyan adventure by discussing what to pack for the weather!
Lower Key Stage 2
We have been very busy in Year 3 this week! We have begun innovating a persuasive letter to the Dursleys in English, in the role of Harry Potter, convincing them to let us attend Hogwarts. We have been using emotive language and rhetorical questions to help us!
In Science, we have been testing if various types of rock absorb water, and their durability. We had fun carrying out a fair test and recording our results in a table. In Geography, we looked at the structure of volcanoes and even made our own!
Sunshine ☀️ and outdoor learning: what fantastic end to the week! On Thursday, Year 4 went to Nell Bank Activity Centre in Ilkley and learned all about how rivers start, the different parts of them and we then conducted fieldwork by the side of the River Wharfe - superb fun was had. We even had time for some orienteering and a sneaky play on the adventure playground! In Science, we learned how use thermometers accurately and made predictions where ice cubes would melt the quickest in class.
Upper Key Stage 2
Year 5 have had an incredible week! We thoroughly enjoyed plotting six-figure grid references to map Charles Darwin's journey through the Galapagos Islands. Together, we discussed the co-ordinates and practised plotting them on our maps. In English, the children have written some fantastic setting descriptions based on the Amazon Rainforest. We have been blown away with the children's creativity, especially their brilliant use of similes and prepositional phrases in their writing. Well done Year 5. We cannot wait to read the letters you write next week!
What a great week it has been in Year 6. The children have written some incredible story openings inspired by our whole class text. They have used powerful adjectives and descriptive devices to build tension within their writing. We certainly have some future authors in the making in Year 6.
