Students will explore the delightful world of baking to celebrate special occasions. They will engage in hands-on learning with professionals and home bakers. Throughout the week, students will sample treats from New England bakeries while acquiring the skills and confidence to create their own cookies, cupcakes, dinner rolls, and more! Some highlights will include a baking lesson at King Arthur Flour, Cupcake Wars, and a service opportunity! By the end of the week, students will have a repertoire of recipes ready to celebrate a birthday, help with a holiday, or simply lift someone’s spirits with a sweet treat.
Day 1
Caroline Thomas "Baking basics first day was a great success! We started off the week by dividing into groups of 2-3 students and creating all different types of cookies! Groups made chocolate chip, strawberry, peanut butter, strawberry shortcake, and cinnamon roll cookies. While the cookies were baking, we bonded as a whole by creating puzzles and playing uno, as well as going for a husky mile to enjoy the sunshine and walk off all the cookies we ate today. Tomorrow we will be traveling to Concord to tour a bakery and participating in cupcake wars! Stay Tuned :)"
Day 2
Harry Jenkins "One the second day, the group traveled to Concord to tour the Crust and Crumble bakery. We had the opportunity to interview the bakers and view their kitchen, learning about the baking industry and what it takes to be a good baker. After that, we grabbed ingredients for our cupcake wars at Hannafords. When we got back, we started making cupcakes. After a lot of careful preparation, we presented them to the judges. Matteo and Harry’s cupcakes won the creativity category, Kennedy and Carol earned the title of best tasting cupcake, Reagan and Sol were awarded the distinction of the best presentation. Reagan and Sol, and Kennedy and Carol's cupcakes tied for best overall cupcake! Today we learned a lot about the basics of baking and discovered the inner baker in each one of us!"
Day 3
Today, the Baking Basics group had the incredible opportunity to visit the renowned King Arthur Bakery to dive deeper into the art of baking. Our class was a hands-on experience, and the focus? Delicious, homemade apple pies! Led by the expert bakers at King Arthur, we learned the secrets behind creating the perfect flaky crust and the ideal balance of sweet and tart filling. With a variety of apples and aromatic spices, we worked together to craft pies that were both beautiful and mouthwatering.
Day 4
Today, we had the pleasure of hosting the 5th graders from New Hampton Community School. We started with a tour, then split the class into two groups for different baking activities. Afterward, everyone had the chance to decorate cookies and enjoy each other's company. In the afternoon, we learned how to make Ms. Walsh’s famous dinner rolls. It was a wonderful day overall!
