After traveling from the USA to Cuba and eventually to the Dominican Republic, baseball lands in San Pedro de MarcorÃs, a place now known to the locals as 'The cradle of shortstops" due to the vast amount of famous baseball players from the region. The Tigres del Licey baseball team was founded here in 1907.
Transcript
- Ozzie Virgil was the first Dominican-born baseball player to play in the MLB. He was born to parents Henry and Isabel Virgil in the year 1932. When he was 13, his family immigrated to the Bronx in New York in the year 1945. Ozzie had a deep love for the sport of baseball, teaching himself how to catch the ball.
- The reason Dominican baseball players never made it into the MLB is due to racial segregation. Virgil joined the MLB in the year 1956, making history as the league's first Dominican-born player.
- As a player, Virgil had modest statistics, with only a .231 batting average and 73 RBIs. He played for 6 teams across 9 seasons for 13 years.
- His real impact came from his time as a coach. He coached the sport of baseball for 17 years. Since his debut, over 900 Dominican-born players have played in the MLB.
Ozzie Virgil Jr. followed in his father's footsteps and played in the MLB as a catcher who played for the Phillies, Braves, and Blue Jays from 1980-1990. He averaged .243 for his career with 98 homeruns and 307 RBIs.
Pedro Martinez was one of the most dominant pitchers in the history of the MLB. Hall of Famer. 3-time Cy Young winner. 8-time All-star. World Series champion. Just a few major accolades of his historic career.
David Ortiz also known as "Big Papi" was one of the most prolific hitters in the MLB. In his 20-year career he hit .286, 541 homeruns, 1,768 RBIs, was a 9-time All-star, and won 2 World Series with the Boston Redsox.
Dominican Impact
These Dominican born MLB players have inspired a new generation of players to chase their dreams of one day making it to the majors. The goal is to carry their flair, aggressive playstyle, and positive representation of Dominican history and culture within the sport for years to come.
Future Outlook
With the help of the MLB the Dominican Republic is starting to create more baseball academies to facilitate the development of baseball prospects. In addition, educational programs are being instituted to create more well-rounded Dominicans on and off the baseball field.
