A reminder for Provisional Drivers
From Mr Cronin - Deputy Principal
This term, I’ve enjoyed getting to know the students at Byron Bay High School. Something that many of our Year 11s (Year 12 2025) are telling me is that they are starting to get their Provisional drivers licenses.
It's certainly an exciting time - getting your license boosts independence, community participation, and supports post-school transition. With this in mind, students, parents, and carer givers may be discussing driving to school or riding as passengers with other students. Before doing so, it's important to understand our school's driving policy and apply for approval to drive to and from Byron Bay High School.
This week, the new Year 12 students received these documents and were encouraged to share them with their parents/carers and return them as soon as possible.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly: murray.cronin1@det.nsw.edu.au
Mr Murray Cronin - Deputy Principal | Years 7, 9 and 11 (Year 12 2025)

North Coast Futsal Championships
Our undefeated Under 14 Boys Futsal team recently travelled to Coffs Harbour to compete in the North Coast Futsal Championships. Here they faced the best teams in the region for a crack at the title of North Coast Champions.
Our Semi-Final game was against Alstonville High School. This game was played at a high tempo with some skilfully executed plays. Our boys were slow to get started, with the score 3-0 to Alstonville at half time.
The boys came out in the 2nd half with a renewed vigour, hungry to get back into the game and a shot at the Grand Final. We hit back with 4 goals in a row to be in the lead with only minutes to go!
Alstonville pushed back for an equalizer and were rewarded with a goal, with minutes remaining to push the game into extra time. Penalties began to loom as the clock wound down and Alstonville clinched the game with a nice attacking play with only 2 minutes left, to secure a 5-4 win.
Congratulations to Alstonville High School as this was the hardest game our boys have played so far this year, and they were deserving of their win. It is to be noted that our BBHS boys threw everything they had at Alstonville in this game and were clearly gutted to walk away empty handed. A great lesson for them on how to lose gracefully.
Our BBHS boys needed to pick themselves up and dust themselves off, as we had a bronze medal to win. In the bronze medal game we came up against Camden Haven High School, who also lost their semi-final. We started this game strong and played some outstanding Futsal to cement a convincing 12-1 win!
In the end, 3rd place in the entire North Coast region is a fantastic result for our boys, and they are to be congratulated for their effort. They also finished with the highest goal total of any team during the tournament.
Well done to all of the teams who travelled and participated in the Championships, it was a great day!
Thank you also to the parents who assisted with transport to Coffs Harbour and to Greg Meek for his outstanding photos!

3x3 Basketball competition continues to grow!
Now in its 3rd year, our 3x3 Basketball competition keeps getting bigger and better! This event is a fantastic collaboration between Byron Bay High School and Basketball NSW, designed to bring the fast-paced, fun, and friendly 3x3 game to local schools in our area.
The competition saw teams from Mullumbimby, Tweed River, Banora Point, Kingscliff, Ballina, and Byron Bay High Schools compete in both the Junior and Senior divisions.
The energy and sportsmanship on the court were great, creating an amazing atmosphere throughout the day.
A huge congratulations to our Senior Boys team – Marlow, Banjo, Omri and Nathan – for taking out the Senior Boys division, and to Levi, Finn and Hamish, who were runners-up in the Junior division. Well done to all the teams who participated!
We look forward to another fantastic event next year – and getting some girls teams in the mix too!

Year 9 History
Year 9 students have delved into the fascinating topic of the Movement of Peoples, examining the lives of slaves, convicts, and free settlers and the impact of the Industrial Revolution on global migration. This historical period saw significant movement through the transatlantic slave trade, where millions were forcibly taken from Africa to America, and convict transportation, which relocated individuals to colonies as punishment. The Industrial Revolution spurred these migrations, creating demand for labor in new colonies and influencing economic and social structures worldwide.
Students engaged deeply with these histories, researching individuals who lived through these experiences. Their findings were presented through thoughtful assessments that not only highlighted factual information but also conveyed the emotional impact of these migrations. Through their work, the students explored the human side of history, giving voice to those affected by the mass movements of people that shaped our modern world.

ASX Schools Sharemarket Game update
BBHS students outperform again!
Eighty seven Byron Bay High School students have continued the very strong tradition in our school by investing in share portfolios as part of the 2nd ASX Schools Sharemarket Game of 2024.
Once again our students are outperforming in the Game, with almost 90% of our students making profits in the Game compared with 63% overall. Nine of our students have finished in the top 100 traders overall. Star performers are Matilda, Oscar, Lucas, Taj, Abbie, Livi, Darcy, Taj and Juniper, with Surya finishing just outside the NSW top 100.
At BBHS we are very proud of our students’ achievements in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game. This game is an important way to develop valuable skills in investing and financial literacy among our students that will prepare them for success in the future. We look forward to another very strong level of participation next year, when Game 1 2025 commences in March.

Attendance - Signing in and out procedures
A reminder that all students need to bring their BBHS Student ID Card to school every day. When students arrive late to school they should swipe their card into the Kiosk on the office counter before going to class. If they do not sign in, they will be marked as 'Unexplained Absent' for the whole day and you will receive an Absence SMS.
Replacement cards cost $5 and can be ordered at the office.
Year 12 - signing in and out
If your child is in Year 12, and their first period is a FREE, they need to sign in at the front office when arriving at school, using their student ID card. If they do not sign in you will receive an Absence SMS.
Year 12 students also need to stop via the office and swipe their card when leaving the school grounds for FREE periods in the afternoon.
All year groups - leaving early
Parents are reminded to please send a handwritten note to school with your child if they are leaving school early. Your child will present your note to their Deputy Principal before 9 am. Once a Deputy Principal has read, approved and signed the letter, the office staff will issue your child with a Leave Pass. This Leave Pass allows students to leave their classroom at the designated time and meet their parent/carer (or other nominated Emergency Contact on file) at the gate.
If it is an unforeseen appointment and you have been unable to send in a note at the beginning of the day, you are required to please come into the office to collect your child. This process can take up to 10-15 minutes as we get your child out of class - so please allow yourself plenty of time.
