A Day of Connection and Collaboration in Welkom
The site visit to Virginia and Meloding in Welkom brought together a diverse group of government representatives, partner organisations, and local community leaders for an in-depth, on-the-ground experience of the GBL pilot projects in one of the province’s most vulnerable districts. The day was designed not around formal speeches or presentations but for genuine engagement and interaction. The visiting delegation had the opportunity to meet stakeholders, witness firsthand the progress being made, and gain a clear understanding of both the achievements and the challenges faced by those implementing the GBL programme. Throughout the visit, stakeholders explored the practical realities of programme implementation, exchanged lessons and insights across different contexts, and discussed strategies to strengthen outcomes and expand the programme’s reach. The experience served as a powerful reminder that meaningful change extends far beyond reports and statistics. It is reflected in the lives of young people and families who are actively working to create brighter futures through collaboration, dedication, and shared commitment. The day left participants with a renewed appreciation for the importance of hands-on engagement and the transformative impact of community-driven initiatives when all stakeholders are invested in the process.
Virginia Site Visit
The Virginia site visit began with great enthusiasm as participants proudly showcased and sold their products. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, filled with conversation, laughter, and the spirit of entrepreneurship. Stakeholders could browse the displays, engage directly with participants, and purchase items for sale – a meaningful way to support their growing businesses. The group was warmly welcomed by Rethabile Sebakamotse, the Linkages Facilitator for Virginia in the Free State. She introduced several participants, who each shared their personal journey through the GBL programme, from the challenges they have overcome to the progress they continue to make. Stakeholders were deeply moved by these stories, taking time to ask questions, exchange ideas, and reflect on the initiative's real impact. Below are a few videos capturing the moments from the Virginia site visit, showcasing the participants’ passion, the partnerships at work, and the collective commitment to generating better livelihoods.
Early Childhood Development (ECD)
Stakeholders then visited an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre, where they witnessed firsthand both the challenges faced by the facility and the positive strides made in supporting young learners. During the visit, teachers emphasised the need for additional learning materials and toys to enrich the children’s daily experiences. In response, partners suggested practical solutions, including guidance on the processes for accessing resources and creative ideas for making DIY educational toys from everyday materials. The ECD was housed in a church, stressing the need for additional support and resources to create an optimal learning environment. Stakeholders and partners took time to reflect on how they could contribute, both through material support and guidance, to enhance the centre’s capacity.

Meloding Site Visit
The next stop on the visit took stakeholders to the second GBL site in Meloding, where they were met with a warm and energetic welcome from participants proudly displaying and selling their products. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as visitors explored the stalls, asked questions, and learned more about the creative process and hard work behind each item. This interaction allowed stakeholders to gain deeper insight into how the GBL programme is empowering individuals to develop sustainable livelihoods and confidence in their entrepreneurial skills. The group was officially welcomed by Thabiso Sekhejane, the Linkages Facilitator for Meloding, who introduced a few participants to share their stories. Each participant spoke passionately about their journey with the GBL programme, reflecting on how it has helped them grow personally and professionally, from learning new skills to building a sense of independence and purpose. Stakeholders were inspired by their determination and commitment, engaging further with them to discuss opportunities for continued support and growth. The visit to Meloding served as another powerful reminder of the programme’s impact, a space where learning, collaboration, and hope come together to create lasting change within the community.
Moving Forward Together
As the day drew to a close, stakeholders reflected on the programme's progress and impact in a debrief. It was widely agreed that the initiative had made a meaningful difference in participants' lives, whose dedication, ambition, and confidence had grown remarkably over time. The transformation was clearly visible during this site visit, especially compared with the programme's early stages. Stakeholders acknowledged that, while notable progress had been achieved, further collaboration and commitment would be essential to address existing bottlenecks and accelerate implementation. The day concluded on a positive note, with renewed determination from all involved to continue building on the momentum and ensuring the programme’s long-term success.
